Mountains of Fire

A high cordillera generally standing over 4,000 m, the highest peaks are almost 5,000 m and have permanent glaciers. The mountains are volcanic, and magma chambers venting to the surface cause the ice and snow to melt in places becoming clouds of steam that shroud the mountains. Two of the volcanoes, Mt. Koropsys and Mt. Tsur, are regularly active and a few streams of lava can generally be seen spilling down their slopes.

Geography

The mountains bisect Krara̰ng from east to west in a crescent shape. Except at the western end, the mountains are high and steep, thrusting their way up dramatically from the surrounding plain. They are permanently snow-capped, and often wreathed in steam. A reddish glow can be seen at night above the two permanently active volcanoes. The Pass of Scale, the only way to cross over the mountains on foot short of mountaineering, was built long ago by the The Empire of Scale. It brings the traveler up to The Burning Citadel and then down again to the other side of the mountains.   The Burning Citadel, the only remaining city and former capital of the Empire, sits high on the slopes of Mr. Tsur where canals lead its lava through the city. Surukaskarekramaş, god-empress of the Tsḭsyrtys, still resides there as do a handful of other dragons along with many drakes, Drakai, Tsḭsyrtys humans, and the remaining Enzulo dwarves.   Mva Enzulo, a former dwarven city now claimed by the Deep Rot sits farther west. It is possible to cross under the mountains using the city's Underworld entrance, but the way has grown far too dangerous for any sane person to attempt.

Natural Resources

The Enzulo dwarves mined gold for The Empire of Scale in these mountains, but the deep mines have all been abandoned due to the creeping infestation of the Deep Rot. The dwarves still undertake prospecting missions to find surface veins, but they mostly busy themselves with quarrying rhyolite to rebuild crumbling sections of the Burning Citadel and to construct new forts as the Tsḭsyrtys attempt to reclaim some of their former territory.
