GSRoE Class 272
The Great Southern Railway of Etorea class 272 was a class of sixty 0-6-0 tender locomotives constructed between 1886 and 1899 for goods services on the GSRoE main line.
The class were meant to update the aging fleet of 0-6-0 goods locomotive without the expence of a whole new class of locomotive. This meant that, starting in 1886, a mass rebuilding of locomotives took place with most having few original parts carried over, with their tenders being among the few original parts incorporated. The class performed well until the introduction of the 359 class displaced them only a few years after their construction. Most retained active service in the main fleet before being numbered in the duplicate list with a 0 added to the front of their numbers. By the 1900s, 2-6-0s and 0-6-2Ts had taken over on goods services so the sale of locomotives began in 1908. This only stopped due to the First World War when seventeen of the best operational locomotives were requisitioned by the Railway Operating Division with ten more being loaned to the Eastern Counties Railway. By 1915 thirty eight were in service elsewhere, ten had been sold for scrap, two had been broken up for spares and the remaining ten were still in use by the GSRoE.
In 1919, the Etorean National Railways inherited thirty seven locomotives with them all being withdrawn and sold or scrapped by 1932. Few locomotives received an ENR number with many of the ones that did rarely having them applied.
