GER № 490 "Barnhill"

Great Eastern Railway № 490 is an 0-6-0ST built for the GER in 1878. She was built by Fox, Walker & Company of Bristol, England as Works № 362 of 1878, she was one of the final locomotives built by the firm for the GER.
Initially GER № 52, she was first used as the works shunter at Hanley Works until 1880 when she was fitted with air brakes and put to use on local passenger trains on one of the smaller branch lines operated by the GER. It was during this rebuilt, her number was changed to 194 and was given the name "Barnhill". She stayed on the Dunington Branch until 1894 when she was employed on the Langtoft, St. Alda & Howick Railway on local passenger trains along Etorea's east coast. She returned to the GER for overhaul in late 1896, she was renumbered to №490 and was re - allocated to Eastford as the Station Pilot, №490 stayed here until 1921 when she (now ENR №40761) was sold to the Royal Aviation Corps base at Colmore to run the bi - weekly passenger train into the town.
At Colmore Air Base, №40761 had her original name removed and was changed to "Julian" as an homage to the , she also received a new coat of Mint Green paint lined in Yellow. "Julian" ran with a set of seven four - wheeled coaches with build dates ranging from 1873 to 1909. With the occasional goods train also being pulled. She was sold again in 1937 to the Hamastone Colliery in Wiltonshire to run their workmen's (passenger) trains as it was currently being operated by an 1850s 0-6-0 tender locomotive without air brakes. Here she was given the number 12 with her livery and name being kept. Post war, the newly formed United Coke & Coal Board ordered eight new 0-6-0STs from the Avonside Engine Co., Andrew Barclay & Sons and W. G. Bagnall with air brakes to run the passenger trains they operated ant to supliment the aging locomotive fleet operating them.   №12 was purchased for preservation in 1964 along with three other ex - UCC locomotives and six coaches. She was moved to the recently re - opened Whitchurch & Longwood Preserved Railway and was given a full overhaul courtesy of Thomas Bates & Co. of Blackwood.
