1947/51 UCC Locomotives
Upon it's formation in 1946, the United Coke & Coal Board (UCC / UCCB) inherited operations of no less than twelve railways used primarily for workmans passenger (paddy) trains. Most of these were using relatively modern locomotives built from around 1905, but a select few companies were using increasingly aging locomotives to run their passenger trains, one of which dated to around 1851.
To resolve this, eight locomotives were ordered from three builders in the UK due to the ones in Etorea still being in the process of being decomissioned by the War Department and returning to civilian use. The three chosen builders were W. G. Bagnall of Stafford, The Avonside Engine Co. of Bristol and Andrew Barclay & Sons of Kilmarnock. All eight locomotives were tank engines of an 0-6-0 wheel arrangement built to a standard design from each company, minor changes to them included air brakes, cab doors and shutters for in the winter and electric headlamps.
