William Short
William Short was an American and Oregonian politician who served as the fifth Chancellor of America for the remain months of Elbridge Gerry's Chancellory from 1813 to 1814. Short had previously served as Premier of the Senate under Chancellor Gerry. Chancellor Short was the first to enter the office after the death of his predecessor. The Constitutional conflict that arose from this affirmed the rule of succession with the Premier and the Speaker of the Assembly being first and second respectively. He and his cabinet ultimately refused to cooperate with the monarch side of the government. As a result, very little was accomplished in his short time in office, which led to the victory of his great legislative opponent.
Following his term as Chancellor, he became disillusioned with the concept of a monarchy in America, and left for Oregon in 1815 following his mentor Thomas Jefferson. In 1828, he was elected as Oregon's third president.
