Philip
Prince
Philip was a Prince of Brazil and Prince Consort of Peru. He was the son of Emperor Augusto I and Empress Maria Louise. Through his mother, he was also the grandson of King Robert I of Argentina and great-grandson of King Ferdinand II of the Two-Sicilies. He was also the great-great-grandson of King Francis I of the Two-Sicilies from his father and mother.
He was trained at the Imperial Military Academy in Rio de Janeiro. Instead of obtaining a commission in the Brazilian army, his father instead married him to Gabriela, Royal Princess of Peru. This was done in order to gain the territory of Acre as dowry in exchange for Peruvian support for Augusto's claim against his cousin, Luis of Orleans-Braganza.
During the Great War, Gabriela declared neutrality, angering the Peruvian ministry. This started the Peruvian Civil War in 1919, in which Philip gave himself a commission in the Peruvian army, raising volunteers from Peru and Brazil. Though he did not command troops in battle, his forces were used in the siege of Lima, entrapping the rebelling forces.
