Isabel

Princess Isabel

Isabel was the daughter of Emperor of Brazil Pedro II, and the heir presumptive until her renouncement in 1879. Upon the coups attempt that temporarily overthrew her father, Isabel and her family left for Europe, where they were given refuge in the Kingdom of Brittany. When the monarchy was restored, she refused to father's call to return to Brazil, and renounced her claim to the throne. Her eldest son, Pedro, followed her in renunciating his line to the throne. However, her younger son, Luis, then attempted to press his own claim, challenging that of his cousin, Augusto I.
