Bonegoat

The Bonegoat is a hardy, four-legged grazer found across the arid plains and rocky hills of Kenshi. Similar in shape and size to common sheep, Bonegoats are distinguished by the bony ridges that plate their skulls and run along their spines, giving them a distinctive, armored silhouette. These plates protect them from predators and the harsh elements, but they also serve as resonating chambers. Bonegoats are acutely sensitive to ground vibrations, able to detect approaching danger long before it can be seen or heard. This makes them both frustratingly skittish and highly valued by herders who use them as living early warning systems. Adaptable and resilient, Bonegoats thrive where few other creatures can, feeding on dry scrub and even licking mineral deposits from stone to survive.

Wild Bonegoats

In the wild, Bonegoats roam the rocky plains and high ridges in small, loose herds, rarely straying far from mineral-rich outcroppings or dried streambeds. Their bony plates serve not only as armor but as tools of dominance, males clash with thunderous headbutts that echo through the valleys, the sound carrying farther than sight.

Though skittish, Bonegoats are alert survivors, their sensitivity to ground vibrations makes them quick to flee from predators, often long before danger crests the horizon. They graze on sparse brush, dry moss, and lichen clinging to stone, surviving where most creatures starve. Travelers often hear the hollow clack of their hooves before they ever see them, an omen, some say, of safe passage through dangerous lands.

Domestic Life

On farms, Bonegoats are valued for their toughness and dependable instincts. They’re easy to keep but difficult to herd, often following the oldest or boldest goat rather than their keeper. Farmers use them for milk, hide, and bone plating, though their meat is tough and rarely eaten.
