Captain Rumfeather

"Those dumb eyes of yours ring a bell. Last sod with that look tried to outdrink me! HA! He gone under by the first bottle, he did.”
— Captain Rumfeather welcoming you in his Inn

The Menace of Serpent’s Fang

Deep within the Viper's Nest, the lawless heart of Serpent's Fang island, Kena’an’s most notorious pirate city, reigns a legend unlike any other. He is neither a mere pirate captain, nor a feared sea beast. In fact he is a fiery-feathered parrot: Captain Rumfeather. With brilliant red and purple plumage and a sharp wit to match, Rumfeather has become a living symbol of the chaos and cunning that defines the city and a pirate's life.

Small he may be, but Rumfeather has survived more storms, skirmishes, and schemes than most pirate lords. He speaks in 14 dialects, bites in three, and insults in all of them. He has an uncanny intelligence and an attitude that has earned him the respect and fear of the city, as well as a fair share of enemies. They say he’s outlived legends, krakens, and won more bar fights than any bird alive.

The King of Viper's Nest

The pirate city of Viper's Nest is a sprawling maze of crooked alleys, rickety docks, and taverns where the only law is that of the sea: fierce, unpredictable, and brutal. Among its many strange rulers, rogues and opportunists, Captain Rumfeather claims dominion over the Drowned Mussel Inn, a ramshackle tavern built from salvaged shipwrecks, timber and salt.

Officially, the inn belongs to Old Harald , a retired pirate with one leg and a mouth missing more teeth than he can actually count. But the real power lies with the parrot, who refers to Harald as his “first mate.” Old Harald has never dared dispute this title in Rumfeather’s presence and even adresses the parrot as he would his Captain. The nature of their arrangement is a secret open to speculation. Some among the tavern’s patrons believe that Rumfeather took the inn by force, while others that they share a pact forged in blood and rum.

Within the smoke and shadows of the Drowned Mussel, Rumfeather stalks the bar like a king surveying his court, his one good brown eye gleaming with cunning and mischief. His custom eyepatch, carved from hollowed black pearl he claims he stole from the belly of a whale, hides the other. According to Rumfeather himself, he lost this eye in an underwater brawl with a Thalasyr.

“If brains were treasure, you’d be the poorest sodding rat in the bay.”
— Captain Rumfeather

Survivor of Three Mutinies and a Kraken

Legend has it that Rumfeather survived not only his captain’s death, but also three brutal mutinies aboard his ship before that. Born aboard the Black Marrow, the flagship of the nororious pirate lord Ezzik Drekk, Rumfeather witnessed the rise and fall of one of the most feared captains of the sea.

When Drekk met his end in a violent storm that shattered the Black Marrow almost twenty years ago, many assumed Rumfeather perished as well. Yet the bird managed to survive - battered, bloodied, and ever defiant - washing ashore with the storm’s wreckage. According to his account of the story though, the ship was not lost in a storm but in a deadly encounter with a kraken. Of course, the only survivor was the might Captain Rumfeather who won over the sea monster as its tentacles crushed the ship’s hull.

The Map & the Curse

I thought to charm the bird with a bit o’ rum and a song. Foolish, that was. Rumfeather just stared me down with that one good eye, then said, "Careful, mate, I’ve bitten folks for less offense. I’ve heard dying gulls with more charm than you."

Next thing I knew, my nose was bleeding, my coin was gone, and the damn bird was perched on my shoulder like royalty.

— Jorin “The Knot” Vahl, who once tried to outsmart Rumfeather

They say Rumfeather holds the key to Drekk’s lost hoard: the treasure of the Black Marrow. A map, whispered to be hidden beneath his feathers or etched in ink upon his hollow pearl patch. Many treasure hunters and pirates have tried to charm or threaten the bird into revealing the location, yet none have succeeded. The parrot’s sharp tongue cuts deeper than any cutlass, and those who press too hard often leave with bruised egos, or sometimes worse.

Some of the patrons of the Drowned Mussel swear they’ve heard the parrot speak in the dead captain’s voice, a ghostly echo of Ezzik Drekk himself, though Rumfeather himself laughs on such claims, often spitting at the memory of the man who “lost his ship and drowned like a drunkard.”

Wonderful, I love him, he's sassy, a little crassy and absolutely chaotic. Just the purest of beings, and right on brand for parrots. And a drinker of naught but rum, also an individual of great taste! Such a fun answer for this prompt Imagica, I love him :)

I love him. Sadly I would be allergic to him, but avoiding him is probably for the best.
