Tenebrar

High Priest Tenebrar (a.k.a. Honored One)

Tenebrar was a High Priest of the Hallower Cult, leading the various collectives throughout Vulsha and the Highlands.   In his youth he was a very active priest who walked the Path of Blood; believing his purpose to be a war against the unbelievers everywhere. He earned his esteemed position in 999, when he orchestrated the capture of Gwynwul fe'Ald. When he cut the woman's child from her womb, he had claimed a great victory for the Cult. The offering of a Lordling, and the capture of a newborn one, was a part of the prophecies left by That Which Was Lost. It was thought that the goals of the Hallowers were nearing.   Unexpectedly however, Tenebrar turned from the Path of Blood soon after, leaving the unbelievers alone in order to focus on the Hallowers themselves. He began raising the baby Lordling as his apprentice, and isolating himself in the shrine settlement of Darkhallow far to the north. He began a new path; the Path of Quiet Piety. To walk it was to offer spiritual guidance to the unbelievers, and to only offer sacrifice from those who truly believed in That Which Was Lost. This caused splits in the Cult, further isolating him until only Darkhallow itself remained under his sway.   Tensions in Darkhallow persisted still though, and in 1018 it came to a head at last. The adoptive son Gwyrden stopped the sacrifice of a Hallower girl, using his innate powers to guise himself as a Remnant spirit. Priests and Hunters took it as a sign to return to the Path of Blood, led by Tenebrar's rival Garusk. Unable to countermand what the others thought was a god, Tenebrar was forced to capitulate.   In 1019 the first sacrifice of an unbeliever was to take place at Gwyrden's hand. Tenebrar had lost control of the Temple, and Garusk had forced the task onto the reluctant young man. After making the sacrifice, a Remnant was freed from its prison and attempted to possess the lordling. Gwyrden ousted it, burning Garusk and several others with his terrible power in the process. Tenebrar helped his adoptive son escape, directing him to his true family in Vul for protection from the Hallowers.   After, Tenebrar was forced southward to Felmor. He was taken in by his old friend Jaligmyr, who offered him a chance at redemption. Tenebrar tended to the secrets of the Hallowers in Jaligmyr's library, where he could walk the Path of Quiet Piety alone to the end of his days. His friend respected his wishes, and would not stand any ridicule of the former High Priest from any of the other Hallowers.   Tenebrar followed news of his adoptive son closely, and was proud of his accomplishments. However he discovered plans among the Hallowers which would unmake Gwyrden, and sent warning to the young Kvar in 1031. A battle between Gwyrden and Jaligmyr broke out. The fighting fell upon Jaligmyr's hold in Da'Garadal, with destructive magics that doomed the city around them. When Jaligmyr gained the upper hand, Tenebrar leapt before his killing blow, saving Gwyrden and shocking his old friend long enough that an arrow struck his heart.
