Races are the second most important thing to a player's character. Like classes, they give traits and skills depending on what race you pick. For example, elves are better at using magic, while orcs have more robust and durable bodies. However, this does not stop people from creating bizarre race and class combinations. While yes, there can be an argument about optimal combos, this gets blown out of the water because of how the system functions. Anything can work if a player knows what they are doing and how to use their character correctly. But at the same time, if someone thinks they'll be unkillable because they're a barbarian elf, they are in a rude awakening. A person's class and race are combined when calculating their stats, which means if someone goes a magical race and a magic class, they will have the potential to be stronger than someone who goes a nonmagical race and a magic class. But the developers at IDQ encourage players to be diverse and to break the mold. So if you have a whacky build or a particular preference, go ahead, as long as you are having fun. Now, there are over twenty races you can play with, some even having variations between them, for example, being a wolf beastman compared to being an eagle beastman. I will not go over all these races because we would be here all day. So I will save that section for another day.
