Valen
As a child, Valen was obsessed with stories of the great heroes of Hyrule and dreamed of one day joining them, he played make believe monster slayer with his friends and was curious about the wider world around him. He didn't just look to the waters beneath and around him, he looked to the sky and the mountains. He read as much as he could about the world, the myths and the legends and decided he would, one day, carve out his own legend.
As he grew through adolescence, he began to clash with his father over ideals. His father was a man of duty and had given himself into service of the royal family but Valen wanted more than to serve, he wanted to explore, to adventure. Telar tried to teach him patience, telling him that his days of glory would come but Valen did not want to wait.
One day, Valen discovered a book that told stories about all of the wondrous things heroes had seen and done. This included climbing the heights of mountains and talking to ancient dragons.
Valen, egged on by Mav, decided he would scale to the peak of the Ice Cavern to search for the ancient Dragon Lanayru. Unfortunately the waterfalls of the Birdpeak Rocks were too high and Valen failed to scale them, falling and crashing into cliff rocks as he did. Luckily, Telar had heard of his son's foolish plan and had followed, he deftly scaled the waterfall and caught Valen, saving him from hitting the rocks at the bottom.
Valen was badly hurt, his chest was nearly split open from the jagged cliff rock he had hit on his way down. Telar used every trick his wife had taught him to keep Valen alive until he could get him home, luckily arriving in time to heal him, saving his life. The long scar across Valen's chest would remain.
When Valen awoke, he heard of his father's heroism and realised he had been a fool to ever doubt it. He had been looking to the world for heroes to follow and all the while he had one at home always looking out for him.
Since that day, Valen has committed himself to his father's teachings, learning everything he can about how to defend his people. During his training, he discovered skills that others didn't have. He then discovered that his father was something called a “Paladin”, difference to the other guards of the kings-guard, and that his faith in what he believed in could be harnessed.
Telar was happy to see similar skills develop in his son but impressed upon him that, although he was teaching him things that would help him in life, he was his own man and perhaps he shouldn't let the spark of adventure die within him.
Valen now knows that he is not yet the man he wants to be but now, with his path laid out before him, one day he will be.
Valen has met the Royal family infrequently over his life but all of the experiences were positive (if nerve-wracking), he is firmly loyal to them mostly out of a sense of duty.
