The Forbidden Isles

The central part of our setting, and often regarded as the centre of the known world (though those of Porpuda argue the same thing), the Forbidden Isles could honestly be described more as a subcontinent than as a mere chain of islands. Tzunar alone is large enough to rival a decent sized empire, and indeed it did home such a thing in the days of Olm. The other island of Vork is much less densely populated historically due to the forests and terrain, but still has a rich history to it. The other smaller islands of the Forbidden Isles are home to anything from fortresses to city-states to enormous Griffin nesting grounds. A few islands are not owned by any organised nation state and left to either tribes or the wild.

Geography

The largest known island chain, the Isles from the ruined jungles of Myuun in the north, to the Icelandic conditions of Xiphos to the south, contain a wide variety of terrains, climates and animals, and as a result, the people’s living there are just as varied, with dozens of languages, ethnicities and cultures to consider even within each nation. Notable environments include the Sandstone desert of north-west Tzunar, the steep Devorian Moubtains separating the Dominion from Vulgar, the Vulgar redwoods, the ruined forests of Vork, and the stony windswept coasts of Vunk and the Duom Peninsula.

The Time for Nightmares

0 PF 240 AF

Following the eruption of the Fires, the Forbidden Isles, and indeed the whole world, faced a sixteen year long volcanic winter, causing crop shortages, famine, unusually cold weather and supposedly, supernatural phenomena in high quantities. This era saw the collapse of multiple empires, including Olm, and the rise of many nations that now dominate the political landscape.

    The Golden Age of Zcaroth
    Cultural event

During this time; after the collapse of Olm as a political entity, the ancient Zcarothian kingdom reasserted itself under revanchist, and conquered much of central Tzunar north of the Scythe peninsula. Zcaroth under its infamous warrior queens was not just militarily successful but came to innovate with a number of scientific and technological developments, such as the repeating crossbows which were adopted, or the use of poppyseeds as a form of painkiller in medicine. Culturally, Zcaroth reached its zenith around this time as well. However, corruption and incompetence spelled the end of this age, and vulnerability lead to a long and costly invasion by the Phurzic Dominion in the west. As a result, the rocky lands of Zcaroth were devastated and many died. Zcaroth still stands proud, but as a shadow of what it once was.
