The Iris
The Iris is what was thought to be the last of gates to other realms used by the Horizians. The gate was said to be a gift from The Travelers. Though residing within the The Guildhall , it used by the entire city for everyday life to the utmost secret of missions.
Utility
The original intended use of the Iris was to sees other worlds and gain knowledge from these lands. As Horizon grew, it became a way of trading, manufacturing, and even developing diplomacy with the worlds that were discovered.
Access & Availability
The Iris is used by all five of the factions, the Adventuring Guild, the Chamber of Commerce, the Mage's Academy, the Church of the Followers of the Travelers, and The Watch, in Horizon. The day to day operations of the Iris fall to the Guild which includes scheduling, training, and general allocation of equipment for anyone who would travel through the portal.
If a member of one of these organizations would like to Signal a mission, they must be in possession of an Signal Ring.
Complexity
The Signal must exchange rings with a member of the outgoing party. This allows the two to communicate via telepathy across the planes.
The Signal then reaches into the Pedestal and pulls out a Portal Gem, placing onto the top of the Pedestal. Every instance is unique, but it ends with a gateway opening to a new world. Though the users can see through the portal, they are limited to the view from the portal and cannot perceive any other senses from the other side until they go through. The portal can then be opened and closed will by the Signal.
Once through, most people experience discomfort to full-on nausea from the trip between worlds.
Discovery
The Iris has always been apart of Horizon dating back to the founding of the city. It is believed that the ability to travel to other realms was gifted to them by The Travelers to aid in their pursuit of knowledge. The Guild Hall was built around it.
