Ubblesfellen

Ubblesfellen is the oldest continually inhabited settlement in Gattland, holding itself slightly apart from the rest of Stolm Nelsbaht and from Gattland as a whole, engaging when necessary but never surrendering its internal rhythms or priorities. Rather than expanding outward, the town has folded inward over centuries, repairing, reinforcing, and repurposing the same structures again and again. This continuity, combined with the island’s naturally defensible position and treacherous approaches, has allowed Ubblesfellen to endure wars, regime changes, and economic shifts with minimal rupture.

Government

Ubblesfellen is governed by an elected council with authority distributed more by responsibility than ideology. Positions are often rotational and tied to specific duties such as harbor oversight, structural maintenance, or provisioning.

History

Ubblesfellen predates the Gattish republic by centuries, founded as a fortified island settlement that never lost its relevance or was forced to relocate. While other towns expanded, burned, or rebuilt themselves wholesale, Ubblesfellen remained in place, adapting the same structures to new needs through careful repair and reuse.

It was during this long, quiet endurance that the Children of Salt and Stone first emerged, originally as an informal fraternity responsible for preserving the island’s oldest structures and practices. Their rites, symbols, and internal hierarchies aren't public knowledge, but their work is visible everywhere.

Points of interest

The Keel & Course

A low-ceilinged tavern built into a former sail loft overlooking the inner harbor. Its beams are original, scarred by centuries of refitting, and the floor slopes subtly toward the sea.

The Saltward Lodge

A squat stone building near the docks that appears to be a storehouse for curing salts, tools, and replacement stone blocks. Publicly, it functions as a maintenance depot and records office. Privately, it serves as a meeting place for the Children of Salt and Stone.

Notable Residents

Sael Thormyr

Council Member and Master Pilot of the Channels. Sael speaks rarely, but with precision. They possess an unmatched understanding of tides, shoals, and approach routes, much of it kept in private notebooks rather than public charts. Sael advocates for Ubblesfellen’s cautious alignment with Sernovia while fiercely opposing any foreign control of navigation or harbor infrastructure.

Ylsa Merrowind

Recorder of Measures within the Children of Salt and Stone. Soft-spoken and relentlessly organized, Ylsa is often underestimated by outsiders and occasionally by council members as well.
