Battle of the Granite Bridge
Description
The Battle of the Granite Bridge is a decisive battle that took place in the year [1168] deep within the territory of Tinvein. It was a battle that decided not only the survival of Tinvein, but also whether the Halfling menace were to be contained, or whether they would have free reign over the East of the mountains. The Skirmishes leading up to the battle
7 days before the battle:Dwarven scouts have spotted several tens of thousands halflings moving in formation, moving in Tinvein's direction. Orders have immediately been given to artificers to try and slow down the invading forces whilst the levies gather up. The artificier response was almost immediate, with many marching in their direction.
5 days before the battle:
The first Skirmish has begun, with the artificers firing their clockwork weaponry with explosive bolts before tactically retreating. This move was supposed to disorganise the halflings and buy time for the Tinvenian forces to organise, but of course, the halflings were ready to retaliate and charge at the dwarves. In these situations, there are supposed to be many other artificers with explosives, scaring the foxes and killing anyone who comes too close, yet this time, with most of the artificers leaving to other settlements, there simply weren't enough. Soon enough, the artificers were overrun and executed on the spot, without slowing down the halflings all that much. The few artificers that survived fled either back to Tinvein to inform of the disaster or to The Golden Valley to request reinforcements against the huge amount of incoming halflings
1 day before the battle:
As an attempt to slow the halflings down even further so that Golden Valley's reinforcements can arrive, the few remaining artificers took a gamble and gathered as many explosives as they can and essentially blew off a part of a mountain, with the following debris covering a tight passageway between them, forcing the halflings to divert their forces and slow their advance by about a day. This gamble has caused them to not have eny explosives left for the final battle, but they believed that they might have bought just enough time for the Golden Valley's reinforcements to arrive in time
The Battle
The battle started with the bulk of the Halfling cavalry charging against the dwarves, whilst their fox archers pummeled the dwarves in formations. Of course, the dwarven archers retaliated as well. For each fallen dwarf, a dozen halflings have fallen, but that was far from enough to stop the vast halfling forces. Upon the cavalry reaching the frontline of dwarven formations, many were immediately impaled and died either on their mounts, or when they fell down. In spite of thousands of cavalry falling, there were simply too many and eventually, the dwarven frontlines collapsed. Forced to retreat, the dwarves fled to the bridge, the easiest-to-defend chokepoint, although by the time they got there, they had only a dozen hundred men remaining to keep on the fight. That is when a brave soldier arose, the The Silver Knight. A dwarf who single-handedly held the bridge against any halfling that dared try to cross it, a dwarf who is speculated to have been possessed by the ancestors who gave him the power to defend the city to the bitter end, as despite fighting for ages, he still had the energy to move on.Eventually, a horn could have been heard from the distance and the Golden Valley's forces could have been seen coming to save the city. Eventually, the Silver Knight fell off from exhaustion, and the few hundred men took his place, doing their best to hold the bridge as they got endlessly pummeled by the cavalry and fox archers, and just as things seemed lost, the Golden Valley's goat riders rode down with swords in their hands, taking on any fox riders they could get their hands on. Soon after, volley after volley of the Valley's crossbowmen rained down upon the halflings and the infantry charged in soon after.
Knowing that there is no way of winning, the halflings retreated from the battle, leaving the dwarves victorious.
