The Dark-Eyed Stranger

The Dark-Eyed Stranger is one of the Fallen of Moray. He is the god of those who defy society's orders, the god of tricksters, liars and rogues, yet always a friend to the people. He is always an outlaw, but never a bandit. His power and influence suggests that he was once a great one, but no clerist or theologian has ever established which tribe or kingdom he was bound to.   The Stranger is a popular god among Free and Bonded Subjects of Moray. He and his aid the poor and defy the powerful, but never with the kind of violence that brings consequences to the community.   The Cult of the Stranger is represented by clerists of four kinds, all of whom wear variations of a standard uniform of plain, grey robes:
  • Wanderers (exemplar/guardian) are mendicant clerists trained in combat. They move from community to community, offering their aid where it is needed before moving on. This can simply involve a little manual labour or teaching, but may also extend to fighting off bandits or exorcising unquiet spirits.
  • Shepherds (orator/pastoral) find and tend to a flock, almost always of bonded subjects. They tend to do so in areas where the gentry or nobility treat the subjects on their estates harshly, and must negotiate a delicate relationship with church and state alike.
  • Retributors (avengers) are moe rumour than proven fact; a secretive order of clandestine paladins who punish crimes that the establishment overlooks, especially those committed by the rich against the poor.
  • Doves (palatinate) act as advocates for the cult and the common people in the courts of the land. They are a combination of politial lobbyist and pro bono lawyer.
