Dragostahd

Dragostahd is an insular nation that lies to the north of the Thousand Kingdoms and south of the Top of the World. It is a federation composed of five principalities, four of which are governed by hereditary princes or princesses and the fifth by the high king.   The Dragostahni people have a reputation as being tough, wary and superstitious. Much of the country has an inhospitable landscape that they have nevertheless carved into a prosperous kingdom. Arcane magic is not abundant—the common belief is that it will lead to tract with demons and is more trouble than it’s worth, and that arcane spell casters are shifty, untrustworthy persons. They favor alchemical processes and the sweat of their own brows, but will on occasion lean upon magic when it is called for. Their iron wills and ingenuity have led to many advancements in engineering and sciences. As a result, there is theme of xenophobia that runs throughout Draghostahni culture that tends to disfavor races and individuals with obvious magical ties. Humans rule the roost, but there are dwarves and gnomes to be found within the mountains. Elves are often met with suspicion and derision for being inherently magical, or at least enjoying the reputation thereof. Humanoids considered actively dangerous like Outsider hybrids (tieflings, genasi), lycanthropes, vampires and changelings are met without outright hostility and often jailed, exiled or executed. Travelers of an arcane nature should take care when trying to traverse the country.

Geography

Composed of five once-warring principalities now confederated under a high king, Dragostahd is divided from its connected landmasses by mountain ranges, offering it a defensive advantage against overland invasions. Forests dominate the southernmost region, while broad, sweeping plains open up the north central region. The western coast provides a great deal of agriculture for the rest of the country, somewhat milder in climate by virtue of the tradewinds.

Natural Resources

In all the world, Dragostahd has the greatest concentration of iron ore and other valuable minerals. Dragostahni lapidary work comes at a high value because of their advanced techniques. They also have a powerful whaling and fishing industry on the coastlines, so make excellent trade on whale oil, ambergris and scrimshaw.
