— The Forgotten Lord

Introduction

"Where do we go when we die" is a question that, for most, is answered with this dimension. A plane with a troubled past, the previous caretaker of Mevvet was violently overthrown by his underlings, in exchange for the installment of a new leader. Nonetheless, it still, for the most part, continues to satisfy its function, namely the recycling of all the souls that enter its domain. Mevvet, often referred to as the Soul Factory, is the destination of most dead souls, and is where their very consciousness and being is disintegrated and recycled back into the universe, akin to the way rain is recycled on Gaia. The plane itself consists of three parts, the main, and oldest being the Soul Well, which is the part of Mevvet that does the actual recycling. The other parts of Mevvet, the Courtyard and the Library of the Forgotten, were not part of the plane when it was originally created by the Creator Dragon, being artificially added on by the Forgotten Lord, the self-proclaimed ruler of Mevvet. There is only one way to enter Mevvet, and that is to fall. After a person’s soul has eroded from their journey aboard The Alkestis, they will slowly sink through it, gradually picking up speed as they pass through the ship and into the inky darkness beneath it. The fall from the Alkestis to Mevvet can take hours, days, weeks, or sometimes even ages, depending on where the Alkestis is at the time. But, the plummet into the darkness, like all plummets, eventually ends, and the spirit’s fall is broken by colliding into Mevvet itself. The collision doesn't hurt the spirit, and, after taking a moment to collect themselves, they would find themselves in the Courtyard.

Organization of Regions

Within the very center of Mevvet is the Soul Well, not the biggest part of the plane but by far the most important. It is here that the Creator Dragon’s great work…works, recycling the souls of the dead. Around the Soul Well are the Fields of Memory. The biggest part of the plane, The Courtyard, is massive and spans untold leagues in every direction and exists around the Soul Well and the Fields of Memory. The Library of the Forgotten is located to the west of the Soul Well inside the Courtyard.

Geography

The Courtyard

The Courtyard, as it is called, is the biggest of the three main segments of Mevvet, and the place where its unlucky inhabitants spend their days waiting for their eventual demise. The Courtyard, much like the Library of the Forgotten, is an artificial construct, made by the Forgotten Lord when he decided to make the plane his home. The Courtyard, and Mevvet as a whole, does not have a sky, its surface merely being left exposed to the infinite inky blackness of the space between the planes. The courtyard itself appears to be, well, a courtyard, one of massive size that spans untold leagues in every direction. Gravel paths run through withered grass and dirt, surrounded by similarly dead trees, their branches devoid of whatever life or colour they once bore. Decrypt benches, gazebos, and lampposts dot these paths and serve as a painful reminder to the spirits that inhabit the plane of the life that they once had. A small, black-petalled flower native to Mevvet named the Black Lotus may be very rarely found off of the gravel paths and is said to be created as a byproduct of the fear and loss that the plane’s inhabitants feel. The only splash of colour in the Courtyard comes from thin, vaporous trails that rise from the Forgotten, each one arching through the sky and heading towards the Library of the Forgotten. Beyond that, the Courtyard is a bleak, colourless place, filled with wails and cries from its unlucky inhabitants as watchful harpies swoop through the air overhead. Nikothoe’s Palace is located within the Courtyard and is where Nikothoe, The Betrayer. Inside is the giant reflecting pond she uses to stare at herself almost all of the time. Around the palace are a few small homes for greater harpies that live nearby.   Sarcophaguses are placed around the Courtyard and are guarded by the honourable sphinxes, the last of Nepuntaku’s followers. These Sarcophaguses hold great treasures in them and/or relics of Nepuntaku that sphinxes may part with after besting them in a battle of wits. The highly intelligent, and prideful creatures fend off harpies/malakhim sent by their masters, but most are hidden and the ones known to the Forgotten Lord have all fallen already.

Soul Well

The Soul Well or Well of Souls is a giant, multicoloured, magical tornado that is a wood chipper but for souls. If one were to examine the architecture and building structure, everything is built around it. The Fields of Memory are around the Soul Well and where newly arrived souls wait as their memories are sucked away and placed into bottles inside the Library of the Forgotten. This location in Mevett is where the Forgotten are, the primary inhabitant and prisoners of Mevvet. These important fields are patrolled by harpies. Surrounding the Soul Well and the Fields is a large wall made of black stone with 1 real entrance HEAVILY patrolled by harpies.

Library of the Forgotten

The Library of the Forgotten is where the fabled the Forgotten Lord is as they casually peruse the vast selection of memories of everyone who has ever died and create Mallakhim. When they are not doing this they are siphoning souls from the well to empower themselves. Besides the Forgotten Lord, Mallakhim are the next denizens. It is here that the blank Forgotten are imbued with the memories of great warriors, scholars and mages so that their power grows greatly. Harpies here are instructed to assist in the creation process.

Localized Phenomena

Climate

There is no weather in Mevvet, only a black “sky” but strangely one can see akin to a summer’s day on the Prime Materia inside. Fog is common, but what it is specifically is a mystery.

Materials

There are no special materials to be found in Mevvet.

Fauna & Flora

Flora

The Black Lotus is a small, black-petalled flower, with a pure-white stem. The flower is odorless, and appears relatively innocent, even pretty, in its own way, and, apart from that, is relatively nondescript. It possesses nothing in the way of obvious defences, but, when ingested, or even touched with bare skin, it will lead the perpetrator to an agonizing death.

Inhabitants

The creatures of Mevvet do not have a special umbrella name.   The Forgotten
Both the primary inhabitant and prisoner of Mevvet, the Forgotten are the many, many souls who fall to Mevvet from the Ferry of the Dead. Forgotten appear as translucent, ghostlike versions of their former selves, and are of all ages, races, walks of life, and even eras, the varying amount of time the fall to the plane takes meaning that its inhabitants could’ve been born epochs apart.   Harpy
Harpies are the primary caretakers and jailors of Mevvet, having been made alongside the plane to serve as its guardians. They have faithfully served as such since the plane’s creation, although whom they served has since changed.   Greater Harpy
Greater Harpies are, in essence, bigger, stronger, and better Harpies. They are viewed as nobility amongst their kin, and the foremost servants of Nikothoe, the harpy queen. As such, they spend most of their days reclining at her palace, unless called to lead swarms of Harpies to battle.   Wraith
Wraiths are what happen when, through some miracle, one of the Forgotten manages to escape Mevvet without recovering their memories and essence from the Library of the Forgotten. They are often on or over the edge of madness from their missing memories, the horrors of escaping Mevvet and returning to their home, and having to cope with the realizations that plague the Forgotten.   Sphinx
Sphinxes are honorable, highly intelligent, and prideful creatures. Before the harpies and the Forgotten Lord betrayed and killed their god, Nepuntaku, Sphinxes reigned supreme over Mevvet, and, unlike the Forgotten Lord, did not use the plane to their own benefit, instead merely protecting it and allowing it to do its natural duties unhindered.   Mallakhim
The Mallakhim are Forgotten whose original memory has been wiped completely clean but have been imbued with memories and knowledge of great warriors, scholars and mages so that their power grows greatly.

History

Long ago the Creator Dragon created Mevvet as a tied-in plane with that of the Vestibule in the Primordial Dream, so that magical energy may always be recycled. The Soul Well sprouted into existence alongside the Ferryman’s boat. With the second flap of his wings whilst the Ferryman is created to be the caretaker and guardian of the Alkeites, Nepuntaku is created to be the caretaker and guardian of Mevvet. Thus, the history of Mevvet is closely tied to that of Nepuntaku. To serve him, and ease his burdens, the harpies and sphinxes were made, each with their own quirks and flaws. The sphinxes were honourable and just, as good caretakers should be, but lacked the cunning to uncover plots, schemes, and other sorts of trickery. For this, the maker of Mevvet created the harpies, who were weaker than the Sphinxes, should they attempt to revolt, but skilled in the arts of schemes and deceit, should anyone attempt to threaten Mevvet in that caliber. For this, the harpies were always looked down upon by the Sphinxes, who were a bit pompous, breeding resentment between the two races. This minor dislike, however, was basically inconsequential for the vast majority of the plane’s history, each fulfilling their duties in defending the plane. Harpies swooped through the skies of other worlds, hunting and returning runaway spirits and men, while Sphinxes remained in Mevvet, defending it and its treasures from more powerful threats. This balance, however, projected to last till the end of time, was shattered by the arrival of the Forgotten Lord. Nobody quite knows who, or what, he is, or even if “he” is a he. What is known, however, is that a great deal of time before the Calamity they, through one way or another, managed to make their way to Mevvet undiscovered, and arrange a private audience with the harpy Nikothoe. Nikothoe was a normal, mortal harpy, but one that had considerable influence amongst her people, renowned for her intellect and prowess in battle. The Forgotten Lord promised Nikothoe godhood and further beauty if she helped him dispose of Nepuntaku and install himself as the new master of Mevvet, and she agreed. Legions of harpies were enlisted towards Nikothoe’s new cause, and, when the time came, they fell on Nepuntaku suddenly and without warning. Nepuntaku, despite being taken by surprise, slaughtered thousands of them, but the swarms of Harpies, through sheer strength of numbers, managed to lift and carry the Sphinx god to the Well of Souls, into which he was thrown, dissolving his essence completely.   Ever since the death of Nepuntaku the Forgotten Lord has reigned supreme, feeding off of the most powerful concentration of magical energy in the universe for epochs, the Soul Well. Using this power and his partnership with Nikothoe they constructed the Courtyard and the Library of the Forgotten. Using both they constructed their own personal servants, the Mallakhim. As of now, the plane is still under the thumb of the Forgotten Lord as they grow more powerful with every Epoch.
