Deep Dwarves
“What is good? Meaningless. You do what you must to survive. All else is window dressing for the soul.”
Appearance
The shortest of all of the forms of dwarves, the Glubokiy are only between two and three feet tall, and are very slender. They have somewhat large heads and ears, and their eyes are also very large to better see in the dark. They are capable of limited echolocation when inside caves, and so they almost always carry a walking stick or staff with them to tap on the ground to assist them, though only when they know that where they're headed is safe, as making noise is an excellent way to draw hungry critters from the Underdeep. They also very commonly carry simple magical bits and bobs.Racial Abilities
Glubokiy Drachev are very small, and though not weak for their size, they are physically weak nonetheless. Spiritually, however, they are very strong, known for being intelligent, tough-minded, and not prone to panic in even the most strenuous situations. In addition, they wither less from using magic, with the negative effects they suffer being half that of almost any other race. Darksight: Glubokiy can see perfectly, even in total darkness, within 60 feet (20 blocks). If they have some sort of implement such as a wooden stick to tap on the ground, assuming they are standing on stone, they can tap their stick to get a limited form of echolocation, out to 120 feet, or 40 blocks. Magical Affinity: The Glubokiy only suffer half the withering effects of magic that humans do and have an increased affinity to using Essence magics. This translates to suffering from half the Tear of Enigma magic (rounded up) and using half the essence of an essence magic (rounded up). See Cold Resistance.Redlines
The echolocation of a Glubokiy cannot see through complete barriers, such as a home with closed windows and doors. They need at least a foot wide gap for their ability to work. This also does not convey better hearing to the Glubokiy, though they do have sharp hearing, they can merely pick up the reverberations from the rhythmic tapping that they produce.Naming Traditions
Family names
The Glubokiy love their names, and tend to tack every last name of every family associated with theirs onto their own last name. For this reason, they have massively long names, and most Glubokiy, if they recite their names to one another, can, eventually find a place where they're related. Their first names tend to be rather cheery sounding, generally consisting of an abbreviated (or sometimes lengthened) word that the parents like, and they usually have more than one middle name generated the same way. Finally, they gain last names from their family, but they also gain last names from doing something momentous, which jump to the front of their line. For example, the Glubokiy family which first made contact with Xulzraiss and ensured their survival gained the last name "Moonwhisper," and any Glubokiy related to that family will go to great lengths to include it in their name when introducing themselves.
Culture
Culture and cultural heritage
The history of the Glubokiy Drachev is not a peaceful or happy one. Being between two and three feet tall, they are the perfect size to be a snack for many of the big, nasty, hulking things which dwell in the depths of the world, and so from their inception they have had to viciously fight for their existence, both from the monsters underground and frequently from one another when resources grew scarce.
Their problem mainly was in that, being so small, they were not physically capable of defending themselves in most cases. This led these deep dwarves into magical development, and they have created schools to teach many different Glubokiy the magical Truths which they might need to defend themselves in the deep darkness. For this reason, those Glubokiy raised in their homeland tend to know at least one Truth. The downside to using magic, though, is not lost on the Glubokiy, and the most common source of death, by far, is withering away to nothing from overuse of magic, despite that their magical use withers their bodies far less than a human’s would.
This horrible trade-off weighs heavily in the minds of the Glubokiy, who know that in order to live, they must use a force that is actively killing them, and this grim wager almost defines their entire civilization. Generally speaking, the Glubokiy are very cautious until they understand whatever it is that they’re looking at. After that, they make a decision regarding how such a thing sits in relation to their own survival, and the survival of their entire subspecies, and they act in pursuit of this decision with the full of their beings. Take when they were gifted magics by the moon’s dragon, for example. They decided that such a thing, despite its cost, was the best way for them to survive, and thus, they sought to spread the Truths they had gleaned to all corners of their civilization. The upside to this pure, resolute behavior is their continued survival, while the downside is that they have been locked in an endless genocidal war with the Kingdom of the Caves and subterranean Rehks around them for as long as their recorded history.
At a certain point in their history, a couple thousand years past, a group of Glubokiy decided that they might have better luck on the surface, and made the long trek from the caves below to the surface above. Though they found more peace on the surface, the fact of their diminutive stature did not change, and so their practices towards the widespread teaching of magic remained the same. For this reason, in most societies Glubokiy are a welcome sight, as they are usually willing to use the body-rending magics which many other races stay away from.
Almost all Deep Dwarves speak Yazyk and Common.
Religion
Though many Glubokiy worship the mythical progenitor of their race, Glubokiy himself, just as many of the little dwarven offshoot follow the moon dragon, Xulzraiss' religion. While the devotion to Glubokiy requires only the holy symbol of Glubokiy and a walking stick to tap his song on the stone, Glubokiy is widely known to not grant his worshippers any power. He, at times, will intervene in events on the plane, using his power to act using magical effects directly, but his teachings require self-reliance, and gaining divine truths would be the opposite of this in his eyes, as well as the eyes of his church. Instead, one should seek magical powers on their own, and seek the void after a death caused by magical use, remembered through their accomplishments forever after. Almost as a natural consequence, this has led massive amounts of the Glubokiy to also, or even exclusively worship Xulzraiss, who occasionally grants knowledge of magical truths to her followers. Most Glubokiy will purchase a Moonmirror, a simple magical device to show the sky above wherever you are, allowing one to pray to, and give offerings to the moon when the time is appropriate, regardless of location.Family
Family is not nearly as important to the Glubokiy as it is to the Karmeny, though they still venerate their elders and lovingly keep track of their names. Glubokiy are possessed of no small amount of wanderlust, and strongly desire to get out of the house and make their own way as soon as they can, and this leads them to be frequently far astray from their family and loved ones. While they'll ask other Glubokiy about the families they have in common when they meet, seeing if they can get updates, they're just as happy remembering the family that they had before they started wandering as they are in having the family in the first place. They love meeting new people and being accepted into their communities, and some Glubokiy actively attempt to gather names by becoming well loved and getting "adopted" by various groups in the places they go.Food
The Glubokiy have no real specific foods of their own, instead preferring to eat things wherever they go. They are willing to eat just about anything besides rotten food, as a rule, as several times in their history they have gone hungry for hundreds of years. That being said, there are plenty of giant bugs in the Underdeep, which, if one can bring them to the proper Glubokiy, can be cooked into all sorts of delicious recipes, using their own shells as cookware.Common Dress code
Glubokiy mostly wear robes, one way or another. Generally speaking, because they see in black and white to better see in the dark, their robes and clothing are black and white, as these are the colors which they see anyway, and the Glubokiy clearly view them as the most complementary colors within the spectrum that they can see. They usually are not interested in flashing their wealth, generally believing that such a thing makes one a target.
Accessories
The accessories that a Glubokiy carries are typically utilitarian things. Generally they'll have a belt with various small, useful tools on them, and most Glubokiy carry an alchemical solution or two. The very rich Glubokiy tend to sport magical trinkets, though usually even these are not flashy, doing only the job they are meant to.Art & Architecture
Though Glubokiy cannot see color, they are known to be excellent painters, creating works with shades of gray which only other Glubokiy can appreciate. There is a specific potion which allows one to see in the black and white vision of the Glubokiy, and while one hasn't drank this potion, their paintings look odd and garish, like some view into a wacko, color-shifted world. Once one has imbibed the potion, however, the paintings become hauntingly beautiful, and are frequently reported to be so lifelike that one could almost reach in and touch what was inside.
Common Myths and Legends
Creation Story
The Glubokiy believe in the same mythos as the rest of the dwarves, and that they are related to the clan of one of the sons of Vykovat. The third brother, Glubokiy Karlik, was a petite and tiny creature in stature compared to his other siblings. However, his size was compensated for by his magical ability, a poison that drained his mind and body. He retreated deeper than the Karmeny Karlik into the world, living in vast natural caverns where he and his offspring developed magical schools and traditions that allowed them to perform feats unknown to the other brothers and their kin.Major organizations
The Glubokiy have no settlements on Anoma. Perhaps you can change this.
The oldest Glubokiy city remaining in the old world is Deepholme, a place firmly in the middle of the Underdeep, miles below the nearest dwarfhold. It is a place for adventurers, on the cusp between the upper Underdeep, where there are certainly some horrifying creatures, and the lower Underdeep, where the horrors are practically unthinkable. It is said that the place sits directly on the well of an extremely powerful leyline, and that great magical items are created in their forges, and many great Truths have been found in their schools.
