Mana Sickness

Mana sickness is an adverse effect that can occur from either using too much magic or too many magic items at one time. Not a lot is known about what specifically triggers mana sickness is or how it manifests from person to person, due to magic as a whole being under researched and understood. There are however documented accounts of sorcerers experiences with the affliction.   Mana sickness is not the same as Mana Recoil- where mana recoil occurs from misfiring spells either due to poor construction of a casting sigil or a lack of ability by the spell caster- Mana sickness comes from overusing one's mana to activate spell casting to the point where their physical body begins to break down. This effect can compromise the casters immune system, disrupts their physical body and a an extreme can jeporise their life. It's possible for sorcerers experiencing mana recoil so beyond so sick that their bodies shut down.

Causes

Mana sickness is linked to magic use and is theorised to be due overtaxing one's own magic ability, the exact source of how magic happens and what source it draws from. Most commonly it is believed that magic feeds of energy and lifeforce. Most sorcerers have a magic reserve of energy that they can access, this when used leaves one feeling mentally and physically sluggish. If this reserve repeatedly taxed or drained completely it starts to put strain n the person and feed of their very life force. Some speculate that mana sickness eats away at life expectancy each time shortens the years of life left. It also possible that exposure to magic itself is what can cause these effects s magic is a dangerous volatile force that poisons rather than siphons from the user.

Symptoms

symptoms can vary widely from person to person, with some experiencing different sets of effects to different severities. The most common symptom is fatigue; the body feel stiff and sore in the joints, the muscles are weak and may spasm with he smallest effort. The user feels tired and has a foggy memory in more severe cases they can for get what they were doing and memories of what has happened, very severe cases report losing ones sense of identity and memories all together.    In the initial stages the magic-user begins to flag, they may feel tired but are mostly upright and functional, this rapidly drops into more severe cases signs of fatigue like shaking, drowsiness, and a need to sit down, they may even start nodding off.  After a period of twenty minutes to and hour the user suddenly perks up, it's not uncommon for users to think this was a minor case of mana recoil. They are upright and talking like nothing is wrong and seem restored, this is a form of latency period which can last hours or even days. Once this period ends the fatigue returns much more aggressively as the user struggles to stay awake, losing a muscle strength and awareness, they may struggle to stand or even sit upright. Mentally, they may become dizzy, confused or even irritable and aggressive, commonly at this stage the sorcerer will lose consciousness completely. The sorcerer will fall into an urousable sleep this can last hours or days commonly they experience a high fever, muscle spasms, they may awaken during this during which they experience confusion, nasea and chills. Gradually he period of sleeping become shorter and shorter as the sorcerer recovers to full health. During this time an individuals magic may be come volatile, they may not be able to use any magic or man use magic uncontrollably, some may even cast spells in their sleep.

Treatment

There is no treatment for mana sickness other than time, it is important to keep the afflicted cool from their fever as well as hydrated. Food rich in iron are also said to help aid the recovery of energy. It is not recommended for hosewith mana sickness to use any spell work until fully healed as this can lead to a relapse in symptoms.

Prognosis

Most people recover fully from mana sickness there are cases of people who simply use too much energy that They cannot recover these few tend to pass away during the sleep stage as the sickness puts too much strain on their body causing it to shut down. There are also cases where sorcerers exacerbate their condition whilst using magic whilst afflicted. This can happen during the latency period when the sorcerer feels fine.

Affected Groups

This only effects those who cast spells not those who receive magic effects. Too much activation of Magic Runes or Scrolls can also cause this effect. The immunocompromised tend to be more afflicted as do veteran magic users. It's believed that the magic strengthens but every time mana sickness occurs the effects get worse and worse.

Prevention

The best way to prevent mana sickness is by identifying you limits and taking appropriate cool down periods Inbetween using spell work , tacit casting without signals ten to be less accurate and require more energy and so using similes with specific effects is recommended.
