The Primordial Elements
As most scholars understand it, the world of Folia and everything on it is fundamentally made up of seven elements, which stem from one source and terminate in one place. While there are far more than seven elements in total, these seven Primordial Elements are that which interact to form the many other Compound Elements of the world. These primordial elements are believed to be the following.
- Stone, the primordial earth
- Water, the primordial sea
- Heat, the primordial flame
- Ether, the primordial space
- Light, the primordial day
- Dark, the primordial night
- Force, the primordial movement
These elements interact in different ways corresponding to their different properties, often creating compound elements as they do. For example, the incredible power of lightning is formed by the conjunction of heat and light, brought about by force in a thundercloud. Compound elements also compound on one another, resulting in fathomless complexity. All living things are made up of some combination of all seven primordial elements, all in differing amounts. Effects of imbalances can range from incredible magical power(in the case of Primordials) to illness and even death (in the case of hypothermia). Wide-ranging regional imbalances, like the extreme excess of heat and light and the absence of water and force surrounding certain parts of the Track of the Sun, can result in environments where almost no life can survive at all.
No known means begotten by the elements primordial or their children can ever create or destroy the elements primordial. Alchemists like the notorious philosopher Nybael the Fool have tried for as long as they've existed, and all they've ever managed to create was their own destruction. Anyone without a death wish generally sticks to isolating them from the plentiful nature around them instead. - Nyshib Moak, Scholar of OxosThe primordial elements are believed to be created by the Root at the core of the world and become The Terminal Elements before being destroyed by the Nothing at its end. These forces are believed to be the source and termination of all that exists. Neither has ever been directly observed in their respective places, but they have been found in substance-form elsewhere in Folia in smaller and impure quantities, typically sequestered by magic.
