Banshee Wyvern

Also known as Screamwings

The Banshee Wyvern, also known as the Screamwing, is one of the most formidable aerial predators in Fanterath. Unlike other wyverns that dominate terrestrial prey, the Banshee Wyvern is an avian specialist, evolved to hunt flying creatures with unparalleled precision. Its combination of long-range gliding, rapid dive speed, and a devastating sonic attack makes it one of the most efficient hunters in the skies.

Rarely seen except in the wild, these wyverns prefer high-altitude nesting grounds, taking refuge in towering cliffs, dense mountain forests, and ancient craggy peaks. Even experienced hunters may never witness one in action—only the sudden, unnatural silence of the sky, followed by the sharp keening wail that signals its attack.

Physical Characteristics

Banshee Wyverns are larger than many other small wyverns, reaching up to five feet in length with a wingspan nearly double their body size, making them among the most aerodynamically efficient wyverns in Fanterath. Their slim, lightweight bodies allow for prolonged gliding at high altitudes, conserving energy as they scan the skies for their next kill.

Their wing membranes are thinner and more flexible than those of heavier wyverns, allowing for quick course adjustments mid-dive. Their coloration varies by region but typically consists of pale greys, smoky blues, and dusky blacks, camouflaging them against the sky at twilight. Their eyes are large and forward-facing, providing superior depth perception and aerial targeting.

The most unique feature of the Banshee Wyvern is its sonic vocal blast, a short, concentrated scream capable of disrupting the nervous system of flying prey. This attack momentarily stuns or paralyzes the victim, causing it to plummet, at which point the Banshee Wyvern folds its wings and enters a rapid dive, striking like a living spear to grasp its prey mid-air.

Behavior and Intelligence

The Banshee Wyvern is a solitary hunter, rarely forming groups outside of mating seasons. It relies on stealth, patience, and aerial dominance rather than pack coordination. Unlike more adaptable wyvern species, it rarely interacts with humanoid settlements, preferring remote hunting grounds where competition is scarce.

Banshee Wyverns are highly intelligent, able to recognize flight patterns, predict evasive maneuvers, and adjust their approach mid-dive. Their sonic scream is precisely controlled, capable of being used at different intensities—ranging from a mild disorienting wail to a full-force nervous shock that can momentarily incapacitate even larger flying beasts.

Despite their deadly reputation, Banshee Wyverns are not aggressive without reason. They are territorial but elusive, preferring to avoid unnecessary fights unless defending their nests. While not known to be tamable in the way of Ratwyves, some high-altitude cultures whisper of riders who have forged bonds with Banshee Wyverns, using them as living weapons in aerial combat.

Domestication and Rarity

Unlike Ratwyves, which have seamlessly integrated into maritime and urban environments, the Banshee Wyvern is rarely domesticated. Their solitary nature and extreme hunting specialization make them unsuitable for ship life or city dwelling. However, their sonic abilities and hunting prowess have made them an object of fascination among scholars, monster hunters, and warriors seeking to replicate their devastating dive tactics.

Some legends claim that ancient sky-faring cultures once bred Banshee Wyverns for aerial war, their piercing screams capable of disrupting enemy formations. Whether these stories hold truth or are merely embellishments remains unknown. Today, wild Banshee Wyverns remain one of the great unseen predators of the skies, heard more often than they are seen.
