The Veil
Sometimes called the Ethereal Plane, the Veil is the border between the world of the living and the world of the dead. The Veil exists between the Material Plane, the Feywild, the Shadowfell, or Hades, and can only be accessed from one of those planes.
The Veil is almost exclusively inhabited by lost souls, those who have escaped being ferried to the Underworld. They are often transformed into malevolent Ghosts, Wraiths and Specters, clinging to the memory and trauma of their former lives. Spirits trapped in the Veil can use it as a pathway to travel between the connected planes, commonly using it to cross over from the Shadowfell into the Material Plane, at night, to haunt the spaces they frequented in life.
Psychopomps also use the Veil to traverse planes and to escort newly deceased souls to the afterlife.
