There was never a little puppy Cerberus, Cerberus was born/created during the War of the Underworld. Which has created a lot of Underworld creatures, like the Imps.
But there is only one creature like Cerberus.

Instead, the creature that comes close to them, is the Hellhound. But instead of haunting every creature that doesn't belong in the Underworld down, like the Hellhounds. Cerberus instead guards the entrance of the Underworld, making sure that mortals can't come in. Which he does well, so long that the mortal in question doesn't bring honey cakes.
