When Malcolm first saw the Vow, she could not understand why her mother spoke of it with such emotion. To her, the Vow was a miniscule, blurry 'v' shape seen through the scuffed lens of a telescope at the peak of a high hill.
As she aged, she naturally began to understand her mother's voice better - she heard reverence and bitter anger, and tried to feel the same when she looked at that distant landmark. Nothing.
When the Scour drove them from their home, she didn't think of the Vow at all. It would be months before it came backDwarfing the crumbling skyline of the abandoned ruins of the bay, The Vow is a 2000' (610m) arcology built atop Sunol Peak. It was first constructed as a symbol and a promise to look after all those who lived within its sightline, as well as all the valleys in-between.
When its doors opened, people migrated from all over California to move in. Some even moved up from the overstuffed arcology of the Hollywood Tower in Los Angeles.
When the Remnants of the Latter Day Saints came from the east, it was The Vow who stood against their IreHeart crusaders and drove them back.
When the Advent War came, the Vow held out against the Aempian Military until targeted strikes took out its leadership, after which Aempis divided Cascadia up across several bidding lords. Treicha Tor Jadey took over Zone 14, which encompasses all of the San Joaquin sea, its attached watersheds, and -- most importantly -- The Vow.
Treicha exiled all but the most critical staff of the Vow, though eventually they too were pushed out into the ruins of the cities their ancestors had come in from.
