Arcology

An arcology is a type of superstructure designed to support a population of thousands within a homeostatic ecosystem. Commerce, tourism, and immigration are not disqualifiers — nor is isolation, though it does violate the original spirit of the concept.

 
Author's Note

The term Arcology was minted by Paolo Soleri, an the American architect and urban planner.

Soleri published the idea in a 136 page illustrated worldbuild called Arcology: The City in the Image of Man, in which the collapse of the ecosystem under global urban sprawl forces a   which describes the collapse of our ecosystem under industry and the rise of arcologies to centralize the population and restore nature.

The ideal of the arcology is not to overcome nature, but to allow it.
