Captain Firendjul Hael was born in the port village of Gjerou on the border of Nim and Finland, a few dozen miles from the city of Brindle. As a boy, he loved sitting on his roof, watching the ships pull in and out of port. He became a cabin boy at the age of eight, and learned to sail from anyone who would give him their time. As a teen, he enlisted in the Morranian Navy, where he served alongside Qo Syrath. They won and lost several battles together.
Hael and Syrath were discharged from the Navy after they suffered injuries from being too close to a blast. Hael recovered first, and found work back in his hometown of Gjerou maintaining the boats left in port. He and Syrath wrote each other constantly.
When Syrath was well enough to travel, he visited Gjerou, and was surprised and delighted to find Hael in posession of The Lucy Lycoris, and accepted Hael's offer to be his first mate.
They spent some time working unofficially with the Morranian Empire, transporting wounded soldiers home. Many asked to return as crew, feeling that after their time in the war, home wasn't the same anymore.
With a full crew, Syrath and Hael decided to try something crazy--- sail all the way to the Archipelago. Thousands of refugees were in need of transport, so, they thought, why not help? Many ships were sailing from the eastern coasts of Kohnja, but very few were departing from the border of Finland and Nim.
It was on their third voyage that our story of Art, Skies, Milya, and Templeton began; that Hael was cursed by... someone. For some purpose. That he was kidnapped by a disappearing vessel full of Shadar-Kai. That Syrath had to act as captain in his stead.
