The Unseelie Court
"While most within the Empire and the Republic see the Fae as charming schemers, the people of the Ceilic Region know that they can also be proud, violent beings with a serious demeanour and a stern devotion to their own laws." ~Church Paratir, Grand Archivist of the Authenian Archives.Despite the fact that the Seelie Court is just as dangerous, the majority of the stories told to the children of the Ceilic Region are about what the Unseelie Court does to those who go too far into the forest alone.
Structure
The Unseelie Court is ruled by a Gancanagh Archfae known as "The Lord of Thorns". The Lord of Thorns has a stern, wrathful personality, and a deep hatred for the Faerie Queen. He treats his underlings fairly, but will kill them without question if they try to betray him or undermime his authority. He spends every waking moment trying to obtain more power, to the point where some believe that the only reason he has not waged a war against the Seelie Court yet is because he doesn't yet possess the power to win.
Oberon Mayflower is the Lord of Tomes, and acts as Chief Mage and Scientist to The Lord of Thorns. He is a Faerie Archfae of significant power, but his cowardice and hatred of confrontation keep him from using this power for violent means. He is the most trusted advisor of the Lord of Thorns, and his completely loyal to him. This loyalty stems from the fact that The Lord of Thorns saved Oberon from a life as imprisonment and torture at the hands of the former leader of the Seelie Court.
Morwen Orias is the Lady of Towers, and it is her duty to ensure that the lands owned by the Unseelie Court are safe from the Seelie Court, and anything else that may pose a threat. She ensures that the soldiers of the Unseelie Court are armed, that defensive positions are well maintained and that traps are laid. Morwen Orias is popular among the Unseelie Military, due to her keen strategic mind and the fact that she makes the Unseelie soldiers feel listened to when they have observations to note or warnings about potential threats.
Elphame Aossí is the Lady of Order, and it is her duty to maintain law within the territory of the Unseelie Court. From preventing organized crime to sabotaging insurrections, Elphame Aossí is expected to ensure that the territory of the Unseelie Court is lawful and at peace. She uses espionage, mercenaries and even simply anti-crime propaganda to achieve her goals.
Culture
The Unseelie Fae are nowhere near as cheerful or colourful as their Seelie counterparts, tend to behave in a more logical manner and usually wear black and grey clothing. The Unseelie Fae are a proud people, who do not take disrespect lightly. They are vengeful and strike out at any who do not treat them how they feel they deserve to be treated. There are many stories about mortals wandering too deep into the forest, accidentally trespassing on the land of an Unseelie Fae and being demanded to pay tribute. Mortals that refuse to this this often suffer a lifelong curse or a brutal death.
Many Faeries within the Unseelie Court suffer from madness, just like the Faeries of the Seelie Court, though the manner in which this madness manifests is vastly different. Where the Faeries of the Seelie Court may experience mania, those within the Unseellie may experience paranoia or delusions.
History
The previous ruler of the Unseelie Court was Tywith Mehune, the King of Spears. He was a cruel Archfae, both power hungry and paranoid. He would imprison fae mages that he believed he could use to gain more power, and would use torture as a way of motivating them into finding ways to increase his strength. That was until one hundred years ago when an Archfae of unknown origin stormed the palace of the Unseelie Court, fought through all Unseelie soldiers and killed the King of Spears with his Nemesis Object, a stag skull. This Archfae would then claim the title "The Lord of Thorns", and take Tywith Mehune's place as the ruler of the Unseelie Court. Due to him killing an unjust tyrant, the Lord of Thorns gained the respect and admiration of many within the Unseelie Court.
Military
The Thorned Knights are the order of warriors dedicated to serving the Unseelie Court. They often use illusionary magic in order to make themselves invisible, giving them a great advantage against their opponents. They wear black armour, often with black fur cloaks. Due to their black armour, especially their thick fur coats, the Seelie Fae have taken to calling them "Crows".
Religion
The Unseelie Fae worship no gods, and rarely come to agreements with them. Despite this, the Lord of Thorns has a small brooch on his cloak that bears the symbol of Nemesis, an hourglass with a sword running through it. Whether this proves that the Lord of Thorns is devoted to Nemesis, or seeks retribution against someone remains unknown to all but the Lord of Thorns himself.
Foreign Relations
The Lord of Thorns has a deep hatred of the Faerie Queen, and seeing as these are the leaders of the two courts, it has brought the two courts to the brink of war. Neither side has made a definitive assault against the other yet, as both are trying to gather as much power as possible before making a move. Only Alto Magnus of the Seelie Court seems to be dedicated to maintaining peace between the two courts.
Laws
Mortals are treated with slightly more respect by Unseelie Fae than they are by Seelie Fae. A mortal can only be kept in forced servitude if the Fae claiming them can provide proof that the mortal wronged them. While true that the Unseelie Fae would not hesitate to torment a mortal over the slightest insult, they are respectful of those who are respectful of them.
