Scarlett Knight

Scarlett Knight was born in the heart of Endref capital, the Port of Lauthor. Endref was home of some of the richest merchants in the land, owing to their trade with their neighbours across the Neol Strait, Mesle. However, this prosperity was not equally shared and Scarlett Knight was born in the slums, one of the few places her mixed parentage was allowed. Her birth brought about the death of her mother, Marcella, and the despair of her father, Tanard Ilevian.   She learned to gamble before she learned to talk; games that didn’t involve luck, money, and cheating were few and far between in the shacks that were crammed together beyond the Masters Row (home of the Merchant Counts). Her father, grieving the death of his wife, taught his child to get by the way he did now: thievery, conning, and gambling. Times got tough and debts were not always easily repaid: on the promise that he was taking Scarlett pet-shopping for her birthday, her father sold her to a Tsrachian slaver. After a brutal journey into the Tsrach Wastes, she was auctioned off as a Venaton to an influential Xzonic Competitor, Wolf Eanon, who ruled the Feral Ford in Xzon.   She was trained to kill and survive by all means in the arena for her master's entertainment, and was otherwise left to tend to my master's horse/stables. As a pre-teen, she murdered her master in the stables1, freed as many of his other slaves and Venatons as she could, and made off with Winnie the horse. She got by fine on her own through her teen years, scamming from town to town along the south of Phesunlay as she kept under the radar due to the bounty on her head set by the Champion of Xzon, known as The Dragon2.   Winnie the horse was all she had in the world and so she learned to ride and over time became adept at mounted combat so that she could protect the common folk from evil, and from raid by Xzonic Competitors and their ilk3. Now, she is impinging upon half-elf adulthood, but her long-time horse friend has fallen ill of age and so she left Winnie with a trustworthy fence she had met in the town of Coragin4 in the south of Phesunlay. Until she gets another horse, she has made use of coconuts to mimic the sound of clopping hooves, which has helped to relieve some of the severe loneliness she has felt on long journeys, especially as she attempted to make her way to the Phesunlay capital of Upper Preschwall5.   All alone, she is reckless, brave, and far too confident in herself, unable to entrust responsibilities to others after decades of playing the hero for those less fortunate than herself (and scamming those who were more fortunate than they should have been). She is especially incapable of leaving her own safety in the hands of others, even though she is eager to put her life at stake for others' sakes. She loathes hypocrisy and believes that all mortal creatures are companions through our mortality. Thus, because she believes that she deserves freedom and goodness, she believes that every living creature is deserving of the same, and she is willing to help them get it.

How Scarlett Knight Arrived in the Bandit Lands

You Get What You Pay For

Footnotes

1 Wolf Eanon favoured his stables as a place to be “one with animals” and so often left his guard outside. This fascination and his general feeling of invincibility did not save him however when Scarlett managed to break a loose bar off of a stall and stab it through him.   2 The Dragon was rumoured to be able to turn into an actual dragon and had been the Champion for 11 years. He got along well with and like Wolf Eanon, and so set the bounty on Scarlett’s head when he was killed.   3 As the people in the south of Phesunlay were often left unguarded, the Xzonic raided north to grab more slaves and Venatons, sometimes for trade with Tsrach. The Xzonic were not often driven to raise children though, and so years would go by without raids (to let people re-settle and hopefully raise children/reach adulthood).   4 The fence Scarlett knew, who she knew only as Pocket, had been one of the few constant faces she saw, mostly to move goods she secured from the dead or fleeing Xzonics she fought. Pocket had always been fair and lived comfortably enough in town, given that his work was not really frowned upon, and so Scarlett grew to trust him as much as she trusted anyone; in fact, he grew to became Scarlett’s favourite person and best friend (who wasn’t a horse). She knew he would always be on the level with her, even when things went sideways.   5 Scarlett was keenly interested in finding out why the King did not distribute as much wealth to the south. She wanted to change his mind or “redistribute” some of the wealth herself, if she had to.
