Elf
Elves are humanoid creatures, though no one would make the mistake of confusing them for a human. Their dark skins of blue and purple, along with their colorless eyes, white hair, and pointy ears give them a distinctly alien feeling. This feeling is not lessened as they become Elders and they grow keratin plates over their skin and gain dragonfly-like wings that tear from their backs.
Younger elves share the natural abilities of humans without any substantial change until they have become Elders. At that stage they grow plates of crystalline keratin over their skin that is so durable it can absorb heavy impacts and shield from all but direct strikes with a blade. The insectoid wings they grow beat rapidly and give the elf the ability of flight so fast they can outmatch a racehorse.
Elves are persecuted throughout Elgis due to their -perceived- monstrous traits, and they are left with very few safe-havens. The Elvish Forest- Pintosehnlin is the only truly safe place for the elves, though not all can or are willing to enter the depths of that puzzle-box forest. The Mavanish Empire is the most hostile to the elves, vicious executions and hunting parties are prevalent in the minds of the elves unfortunate enough to be located within their borders. The Ardetus Nation allows elves to live amongst their populace, but they are treated as second-class citizens and often the victims of criminal activity. The Conjoined Kingdom is the most tolerant, allowing elves to live in segregated areas with minimal infringement on their rights. Resentment of humans is commonplace amongst elves, but they have not attempted any form of counter aggression due to their still-recovering populations from the Andier and the subsequent territory wars. Due to their long lifespans, children are rare amongst elvish communities and are often viewed as valuable resources.
Basic Information
Growth Rate & Stages
The life cycle of an Elf is unlike any other humanoid species, and not simply due to their prolonged lives.
Child
The child stage lasts from birth to five years, in which the elf will grow at the rate of the average human child.
Larva
The larva stage lasts from five years to twenty years, in which the elf will not grow in any physical capacity -which prevents the usage of magic- though they will continue to mature mentally.
Pupa
The pupa stage lasts from twenty to fifty years, in which the elf resumes physical maturation and gains their use of magic.
Adult
The Adult stage lasts from fifty to a hundred, in which they stop maturing for the final time, appearing to be the human equivalent of thirty.
Elder
The Elder stage lasts from a hundred to two hundred, where their lifecycle ends. It is at the beginning of this stage that their keratin plates and wings grow in.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
Elves have three different names: a birth name, a formal name, and a personal name. The birth name is chosen by the parents and is used by everyone, formal or informal, and is abandoned in favor of the formal and personal name, chosen by the individual when they reach adolescence.
The formal name is used in formal settings, by strangers, or those not close enough to use the personal name. The personal name is used by family and close friends.
Using the wrong name in the wrong context is incredibly rude, taboo, and is potentially relationship ruining.
Major Language Groups and Dialects
Elves, primarily those in Pintosehnlin, speak a form of archaic Mavanian.
