Divine Spark

The divine among the residents of Elgis function in a separate class entirely due to their divinity. This divinity is not an inherent trait instilled in the divine, however, it is a product of them absorbing items known as Divine Sparks.     The Divine Sparks were originally held by the conceptual entities known as the Primordials, which were then stolen by the Prime Gods at the end of the first age. The Prime gods experimented with these items, finding them capable of giving control over the concept that the Primordial it belonged to embodied. Concepts such as life, time, and substance could be manipulated by absorbing the corresponding Divine Sparks. As well as the conceptual control, the Prime gods found their natural abilities such as strength, speed, and their senses increased a hundredfold. They found themselves slowly altered by the sparks they'd absorbed, traits and memories of the previous wielders bleeding into their current forms; the sparks retaining them. The divine creatures found they could see things that they could not before, such as the horrible creatures that were the true forms of the celestial bodies above them, and the fractured gateways to a separate realm spread across the land.   With subsequent experimentation, the Prime Gods discovered they could fracture a Divine spark into smaller sparks. The spark, when "broken", splits into subsparks that hold dominion over smaller pieces of the original spark. For instance, when the Divine spark of magic was "broken" it became six shards, each embodying one of the magical elements (which were then given to the fledgling Dragon Gods). These subsparks were unaltered aside from their breadth of control.   In the modern-day of Elgis, with most of the gods dead, Ascended, or lurking in sheltered corners of the world, there are not many Divine sparks left that could be claimed by the modern inhabitants. However, buried within the desiccated remains of long-dead gods deep beneath waves and deep beneath the earth, the Divine sparks still lay, waiting to be absorbed by whatever may wander in and leave a god.
