The Grand Octarium

The Grand Octarium is the central and most important structure in both the Kingdom of Turelance and the Turelance Academe. It serves as the starting point for all who come to study the arcane arts—where every aspiring mage begins their journey into the world of magic.   What began as a modest research hall has, over the centuries, evolved into a magnificent and intricate multi-structured complex, representing the heart of magical learning and innovation within the kingdom. The Octarium stands not only as a place of study, but as a symbol of Turelance’s dedication to knowledge, unity, and the pursuit of mastery.

Purpose / Function

The Grand Octarium was originally built as a residence for the founders of the Turalance Academe a place where they could conduct their magical research and personally instruct their apprentices. Over time, the building expanded and evolved, growing from a private study hall into a vast, multi level complex that now houses students, faculty, and researchers alike.   Today, the Grand Octarium serves as the heart of the Academe and the city itself, hosting lecture halls, research chambers, and archives dedicated to both magical and general studies. Within its walls are laboratories for arcane experimentation, medical research, and mana theory, as well as numerous workshops for crafting potions, enchanting artifacts, and developing new magical technologies.   The Octarium also contains the registries responsible for evaluating each student’s mana potential and elemental alignment. What began as a small private institute has grown into a public and internationally renowned center of learning, representing the pinnacle of magical scholarship in the Kingdom of Turalance .

Architecture

At the heart of the Grand Octarium stands the inner cross shaped building, a three story structure reserved for the Ace Maygus and other high ranking advisors. This central hall serves as their living quarters, research chambers, and classrooms for advanced and private instruction. Encircling this core is the seven-story octagonal structure, which represents the eight elemental disciplines. Each side of the octagon is dedicated to one of the elements and divided into multiple floors with specialized purposes:
  • First Floor: Public spaces such as kitchens, dining halls, recreation areas, and gardens. These areas serve both students and visitors, offering rest and social interaction.
  • Second & Third Floors: Residential wings, offices, and personal workrooms. These levels also include private libraries, study halls, and classrooms for specialized instruction.
  • Fourth & Fifth Floors: Research wings and lecture halls dedicated to ongoing studies of each element’s properties and applications.
  • Sixth Floor: Workshops for crafting, enchantment, potion-making, and material refinement.
  • Seventh Floor: Training grounds for advanced or physical magical disciplines, including flight, elemental shaping, forest guardianship, and other high-intensity practices.
Beyond the main octagonal walls stand eight subsidiary buildings, each connected directly to one of the elemental sectors. These structures serve as registration and assessment halls, where new arrivals undergo mana scanning, aptitude testing, and placement evaluations to determine their elemental affinities and academic paths.   Between each of these halls rise eight circular towers, each soaring eight stories high. These towers are dedicated to magical and experimental research, high-level spellcasting, and ritual training places where dangerous magic can be studied and controlled safely.   Together, these interconnected structures form a perfect blend of geometry and function, symbolizing harmony among the eight elements and the unity of magic, science, and study that defines the Turalance Academe.
