Human

Among the sentient species of Elema, humans are one of the most adaptable and curious. Despite having comparatively shorter lifespans, they’ve built some of the most diverse civilizations across the world. Physically, intellectually, and magically, they are average—but that balance is their greatest strength.

What makes humans particularly unique is the randomness of their magical traits. Their elemental resistance, magical aptitude, and inherent weaknesses are not fixed at birth, unlike most species. For example, a human born with resistance to fire we'll have the water weakness. Though their child could have a light resistant and a dark weakness These resistances and weaknesses are inversely linked and completely individual.

In contrast, 70% of most other species are born with aligned magical traits—resistance and power flowing from a shared elemental affinity. Entire cultures are often shaped around a dominant elemental type. Humans, by comparison, are scattered across the spectrum, both magically and culturally.

Because of this unpredictable magic alignment, humans have become frontrunners in developing magical technology. Their diversity has driven innovation in multiple fields, while other species often focus on enhancing the one element that dominates their population.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Humans are bipedal with two arms, ten fingers, and ten toes. They have round skulls, paired ears, and a facial structure composed of two eyes (with round pupils), a nose, and a mouth. Hair density varies by region, with most having thin body hair and thicker hair on their heads. Males often grow facial hair as well.

Natural Magic

Humans have innate magical resistance and an inherent magical weakness. These are randomly assigned, often differing from their natural magical affinity. While some families appear to share elemental trends, most magic types are scattered randomly across the population.

Genetics and Reproduction

Humans reproduce sexually through a male-female pair. A child is born approximately nine months after conception. Humans typically remain fertile until around age 120.

Growth Rate & Stages

  • Humans are considered infants between the ages of zero to four, during which time they were completely dependent on their parents for food and care. They gradually pick up mobility and world awareness.
  • The next stage is kids who learn, play, and grow between the ages of five to twelve. Although kids are not as dependent on their parents at this point, they are still present to meet the majority of their needs. However, young kids are inquisitive and beginning to understand others and themselves. People have a saying that a young child always hears and retains. My favorite saying from my friends at the bar is “Kids are just little people who become truth drunks”.
  • Between the ages of 13 to 25, their bodies begin to evolve and develop into adults, which is referred to as the teenage years. Their physical body begins to gain figure, height, weight, and muscles. In most situations, this is also where natural magic develops. In most circumstances, they will also begin to establish their identity and become less reliant on their parents.
  • From the ages of 26 to 163, they are in their adulthood, their bodies have matured, and they have a good sense of what their natural magic will do. It will continue to develop as they age, but in most cases, it has a set of talents.
  • From 161 to roughly 200 years of age, they are elders; their bodies have gradually begun to slow down and become weaker, as have their magical talents if they are not kept up with. Other people regard them as wise because they have lived a lengthy life for a human. This is the human life cycle.

Ecology and Habitats

Humans are found throughout Elema, capable of surviving in nearly every biome thanks to their combined understanding of magic, science, and nature. They build settlements, cities, and empires in forests, deserts, tundras, and beyond.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Humans are omnivores and require a balanced intake of plants and meat. Proper nutrition is essential for maintaining their physical and magical health.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Human communities vary greatly, influenced by geography, culture, and history. They are extremely sociable organisms, forming families, clans, guilds, cities, and nations. Because of their shorter lifespans, humans tend to live in the present moment and may struggle with the slower, long-term viewpoints of longer-lived creatures. However, they are quick to forgive, flexible, and frequently create friendships beyond species boundaries.

Average Intelligence

Humans are highly intelligent and capable of abstract reasoning, invention, diplomacy, and learning. They are natural problem-solvers, and their unpredictability often gives them an edge in unfamiliar situations.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

  • Sight: Effective up to 2 miles in daylight. Poor night vision compared to many species.
  • Hearing: 20 Hz to 23 kHz—within the standard range.
  • Smell: Can detect a wide range of scents, but with less precision than more scent-oriented species.
  • Touch: Sensitive skin receptors help detect pressure, temperature, and pain.
  • Taste: Humans distinguish five primary flavors: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami.
