Newgil
Nestled on the glittering southern edge of Aethel’s great Central Lake, Newgil is a city shaped by water, wind, and the rhythm of the nets. Known as the fishbasket of Aethel, Newgil supplies much of the nation’s fresh and preserved fish, feeding inland cities far from salt or sea. While not as militarized or politically significant as other cities, Newgil holds quiet power through its mastery of freshwater bounty and its control of lake-bound commerce.
Government
The region is officially overseen by Pralat Willem Thatch, though rumors have it that the guild leaders in the city work quietly behind the scenes to control the young governor.
Industry & Trade
Newgil thrives on lake fishing; netting, gutting, drying, and transporting vast amounts of perch, whitefish, and eel. Ice boxes keep the catch fresh before transport inland. Cured and spiced fish are popular exports, and seasonal festivals often attract traders from neighboring cities. Barges and flat-bottomed skiffs form the lifeblood of Newgil’s lake trade routes.
Guilds and Factions
Architecture
Newgil sprawls out in gentle curves along the lakefront, with weathered docks, stilted homes, and drying racks giving it a pungent, saltless tang. Its districts are arranged in arcs around the harbor:
Gilltown, the working-class fishing quarter, is filled with creaking taverns, fish markets, and rope makers.
The Silver Wharf is the district where guilds handle trade and shipping logistics, and ferries depart across the lake.
The Oarstone, a hilltop civic quarter and religious district that houses Newgil’s administrative works and the Chapel of the Morning Star, the official Lathander holy site in the city.
