Mecklenberg

Mecklenberg is the radiant heart of Aethel. It is a gleaming city where faith and law walk hand in hand. Built within the sacred Lumen Forest and home to the Grand Cathedral of Light, the city serves as the seat of the Sovereign, the Koster dynasty, and the Church of Lathander. Its streets are orderly and serene, lined with sunstone-colored buildings and flowering trees, but behind the gold-trimmed marble and glass lies a vast bureaucracy and a crucible of political intrigue.
Mecklenberg is devout, formal, and ordered. Festivals follow celestial alignments and sacred anniversaries, often culminating in dramatic sunrise rites. The arts are heavily influenced by religious themes, with stained glass, devotional theater, and sun-blessed bronze statuary lining public squares.

Government

As the capital of a hereditary theocracy, Mecklenberg blends religious and civic governance seamlessly. The Sovereign rules as both monarch and divine steward, supported by the Royal Council of the Dawn, a rotating body of clergy, military commanders, and regional lords who advise on policy and law.
The Solar Inquisitors, a secretive arm of the Church tasked with rooting out heresy and maintaining doctrinal purity, mix with the Sovereign Guard, elite knights and paladins tasked with guarding both the cathedral and royal family.

Points of interest

  • Grand Cathedral of Light: The largest temple to Lathander in all of Iroth, centerpiece of worship, pilgrimage, and doctrine. Its crystal dome refracts sunrise into a kaleidoscope across the sanctuary floor.
  • Solar Palace: Home to Sovereign Koletta Koster and the ruling family, also housing chambers for the High Council of Light.
  • Adjudicant Hall: The apex of Aethel’s legal body, where high priests render judgment in both spiritual and secular law.
  • The Archives of Dawn: A sprawling library of ordinary works, as well as a repository of tomes, scrolls, and prophecy—some of which are not for public eyes.
  • Architecture

The city is made up of tiered districts that rise gently from the ground up toward the Crownrise, a massive hilltop upon which the Grand Cathedral of Light and the Solar Palace sit.
The outermost district, the Radiant Ring, is home to artisans, merchants, and the bulk of the city's population.
The Dawnwalk, the middle tier, houses embassies, government ministries, and the estates of noble and ecclesiastical families.
The city’s spiritual and political summit is called the Crownrise. It is reserved for high clergy, royalty, and temple leadership. It is said to glow faintly at dawn.
