Nefertem Korath

Nefertem Korath, King of The Realm, worked tirelessly to keep the peace between his kingdom and their lawless neighbors in Neverland. The son of the introverted Malik and the bubbly Daisy, Nefertem did his best to strike a middle ground in his interactions with others. He was approachable but guarded, jovial to those he called friends but frustratingly unreadable to those he did not know or did not trust.

Prior to his ascension to the throne at age 30, he was perhaps best known for his incredibly long dreadlocks. Realizing at a young age that his mother could make magic with her hair, Neftertem resolved to leave his own hair uncut until it had reached the same length as his mom’s. At first, the young man hoped his hair would be imbued with some sort of wondrous and/or fantastical powers, but eventually he came to enjoy his hair for its own sake.

Sadly, under pressure from The Crown’s Assembly, Nefterem cut his hair on the occasion of his coronation and opted to wear it short for the rest of his life. Sadder still, his life was to be cut short at age 55 during a campaign to help keep the peace in neighboring Neverland. And yet, despite his altogether too-brief life, the positive influence he had on future generations was profound.

Seeking to spare his daughters and any children they might have from the meddling of the Assembly—and to spare his subjects, as much as possible, from the same—Nefertem made two moves for which he would forever be remembered.

First, he passed—with much grumbling from the Assembly—the Acts of Self-Expression, which made it illegal to discriminate against individuals based on over two dozen aspects of personal identity. And secondly, he sent his daughters Amarna and Auset to live for a time in the much more progressive Republic of the Reek. Whilst there, he encouraged the young women to take all the time they needed to learn about the world outside of Wonderland and to come home for good only when they felt so certain of themselves that they would never allow the Assembly to meddle in their personal affairs the way he had done.

I am sad for both his hair and his life. He sounds like good people.

Yes! I've just had an idea that I think will make us love him even a little bit more and will probably add it this morning. I'm torn on whether I'll hit notify again though.

A nice guy and a competent leader! A golden combination--the sort who unfortunately never seem to get to live out a full, natural life.

Sadly, yes, that's true. I actually came up with birth and death dates years ago while trying to sort out the reigns of each king/queen in the line, so I blame Younger Me for being cruel and ruthless by killing this guy so young.

The hair-cutting ritual is interesting. I am glad he got rid of it!

Me too. One thought I've just had: I wonder if he decided to start growing his locs out again once he had firmly established his own power. That would be an interesting ending, I think.
