Maccius
Blade of Judgment Maccius (a.k.a. The Commander of the Host, First Sword of the Heavens, The Unbreaking Flame)
Creation and Purpose
Maccius was the first of the angels created by the goddesses Xelene and Randia at the dawn of the divine war. Forged from radiant law and celestial fire, he was built not only for strength but for leadership. Maccius was meant to be the gods’ hand in the mortal realm - a commander who would unite mortals and angels under one standard of justice.
Unlike Nilsa, whose power was distributed across four blades and emotions, Maccius was singular: resolve given form, absolute in his convictions. He was not without mercy, but to him, mercy was earned, not freely given.
Role in the Wars
Maccius served as the unshakable commander of the angelic host throughout all three Wars of Light and Darkness. His presence alone brought order to chaotic battlefields and resolve to broken spirits.
First War (19990 – 19984 BCE)
Maccius led the first divine crusade into Ebbavion, organizing a fragmented mortal resistance into a structured army. His voice was law on the battlefield, his sword Judicator splitting darkness and doubt with equal force. Though Astrea fell during this war, Maccius was instrumental in the survival and retreat of the remaining angels.
Second War (19924 – 19893 BCE)
During the second conflict, Maccius’s leadership became even more vital. He personally led the Liberation of the Nine Chains on Manfail Isle, wielding his greatsword in a divine arc that broke an entire ward of infernal binding magic.
It was also during this war that he noticed Nilsa’s growing instability. Though he tried to confront her with logic and compassion, he was bound by duty - and failed to see how deeply she had already been changed.
He forged a new divine shield from the shards of Astrea’s broken spear and bore it into battle, hoping her spirit might protect them where strategy could not.
Third War (19885 – 19876 BCE)
Despite mounting losses, Maccius held the angelic forces together. He knew that if this war was lost, there would be no fourth. With his voice, he called banners across Valon. With his sword, he carved paths into demon-held lands.
But trust would be his undoing.
Two years before the war’s end, during a high council in preparation for a final strike against Viremalas, Maccius was betrayed and slain by Nilsa, the angel he had once mentored, protected, and trusted more than any other.
He did not raise his sword against her.
He never believed she would truly fall.
His death shattered morale. Within days, the alliance crumbled.
Fighting Style and Abilities
Maccius embodied divine control. His blade Judicator was a symbol of celestial law, capable of severing magical effects, banishing minor demons, and even disrupting pact-bound souls. His strikes were calculated, powerful, and heavy - each swing a pronouncement of judgment.
His divine aura bolstered allies’ defenses, and in his presence, lesser demons could not speak lies aloud. His Divine Ward - the shield forged from Astrea’s spear - could absorb spells and reflect them once per battle.
Though powerful, Maccius fought with restraint, believing that justice should be cold, measured, and impartial. This ultimately made him predictable - something Nilsa and Sylix used against him.
Symbolism and Legacy
Maccius represents order, sacrifice, and leadership. His death is often seen as the moment the heavens themselves were struck silent. For centuries after, clerics of justice wore broken sword sigils in mourning. Some even whispered that his death marked the moment when the gods themselves lost faith in war.
Legends say that his body was never found - that Celian took it, and sealed it within one of her many vaults. Others claim his soul was too pure to remain bound to Ebbavion, and that he was reborn as a star, watching over the world in silence.
One prophecy holds that should Judicator ever be recovered and reforged, Maccius shall rise again - either to restore order, or to judge the gods who abandoned it.
