Proto-Elves
Proto-elves were one of the first sentient species to develop on Eälendspar. They were created to populate the oceans, where humans were created to populate the plains and dwarves the mountains. There were created earliest of these, and their development was highly controlled, rather than natural evolution. They had the ability to extract oxygen from air directly. They were physically shaped for underwater propulsion with long powerful limbs and wide webbed hands and feet, but additional had the innate ability to push water out of the way, moving as if more hydrodynamic than their bodies would suggest. this same ability to control the water on them also protected them from extreme pressures. In addition to controlling the water around them they were also hypersensitive to currents and could sense currents even at a distance. This sensitivity to currents is what gives rise to the idea of elven grace in modern elves, and ability to sense currents at a distance is what assists modern elves in their excellent archery. Proto-elves are the ancestors of modern elves, though all known elves now live primarily on land. Proto-elves formed complex societies under the sea, primarily near the coast or at atolls where sunlight reached the ocean floor. In the transition between sea and land they would frequently build structures that extended from the ocean floor into the sky.
Culture
Common Dress code
Clothes were a drag under water with no value, so no clothing was developed other than riding harnesses and armor.
Art & Architecture
Proto-elven architecture was designed to survive the constant flow of water without eroding, so is full of smooth hydrodynamic shapes, oriented around the prevailing currents and tides. Doors were also constructed as sliding walls in round portals, to prevent a pressure difference between rooms from making the door hard to open.

Proto-elves and turtles
The proto elves commonly rode on the back of turtles. For the land dwellers today, it is easy to misjudge the value of turtles as a means of transport. While turtles’ steps on land are tiresome, they move through water effortlessly and at surprising speed. In fact, they can be so fast, it was necessary for the early proto elves to lay flat against the shelled back of the turtle to prevent drag on their bodies from the high velocity of water. Their legs would be straddling the turtle shell. Eventually, some proto elves modified turtle shells to rise into a shield near the turtle head. This was of course done with magic and these curious creatures may still be found today.
Turtles are important to the proto elves as more than just early means of transport. In fact, the folklore of the druids claim that proto eleves first discovered land while on riding on the back of turtles returning to land to lay eggs.
Curiously, this may also be relevant in the other direction. Some of the coastal druids today still let their young on the back of turtles. The turtles will often take the children underwater for an adventure. Some children never return and it is thought that they have discovered their roots and made the decision to stay. One of the most adventurous episodes for Annerion is riding a turtle out to sea and finding ezelnar.
