The Primordial Ruins
Deep inside the cavern systems underneath the Cave of Secession lies the Primordial Ruins. They are named as such because no one knows exactly from which time they are from except for the fact that they were not created by any known surface dwelling species. This is at least according to the Holy Order of Druids who argues that they have no account of these ruins and since they have where around since the beginning of the world, they argue that something unknown must have created them. Whatever the case multiple explorations have not found any signs of life or danger in the ruins themselves although the caves do still go deeper.
The ruins mostly consist of houses built from finely cut stone and bricks. Their size suggest that most of the inhabitants where about of human size although some buildings are much taller than that with impressive archway doors. There also seem to have been made some kind of irrigation system to what could have been fields outside the town, although these systems no longer lead water and all the crops are long gone instead replaced by barren rock and patches of inedible mushrooms and moss.
By the size of the ruins some scholars have theorized that they could house about 10,000 people although others argue that the fields are much to small to feed that many. Whatever the case the ruins have little riches left in them as the first to discover them where adventurers hungry for riches and as such they kept the ruins secret until they had looted everything.
Now the ruins are used as a base for exploring further down and the Holy Order of Druids have set up a camp for their further study and protection.
Demographics
The Holy Order of Druids have mostly sent elves and dwarves down to manage the settlement, but they quickly became outnumbered by the growing number of adventurers of all races hoping to find riches in the caves below.
Government
None, although the Holy Order of Druids are acting as a makeshift police force to take care of any crime.
Infrastructure
Besides the building used by the Holy Order of Druids there are no permanent buildings. Despite this some former adventurers have set up a semi permanent tent camp up to act as an inn.
Climate
The cave is en general very damp, with even the occasional fog bank rolling over the ground. No one is quite sure exactly where the water is coming from in the otherwise mostly arid cave.
