Veil-Born

Veil-Born is a descriptor applied to any creature that enters Duurn from beyond the Veil, in Celestia. There is a nearly endless variety of such creatures, with little possibility of rigid categorization among them, but most are actively hostile to human life. Though many are intelligent and may even have the capacity for basic speech, few seem interested in conversing with humans. However, they are intelligent enough to coordinate and strategize amongst themselves, to some degree.

Much about the Veil-Born is not fully understood, including how (and why) they come to Duurn. It is believed that they enter the Stereoma through Stoma in the Veil that have become sufficiently large, supported by the fact that they tend to appear in times of strife and disaster.

Wherever Veil-Born appear though, destruction and horror is soon to follow. During the Ridbhan Calamity, Veil-Born emerged from the center of the continent and methodically worked their way across the continent, slaughtering and destroying the hold of humanity on the continent, not stopping until the entirety of Ridbha was depopulated.

In recent times, Veil-Born sightings have become more common, leading to fears that another Calamity may be fast approaching. In Teshoya, Veil-Born emerged from beneath the ruins of Tetrövim, only stopping when a detachment from the Humanist League collapsed a mountain on top of the city. Even then, reports of Veil-Born encounters near the area suggest that this may have only delayed the inevitable.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Veil-born do not share any universal physical attributes. There are a number of observed "varieties," but even within these constructed categories, there are wide differences in appearance. Most appear vaguely insectoid or cephaloid and many have exoskeletal structures. Many believe they take on forms, either intentionally or unintentionally, based off the fears and perceptions of the mortals they encounter.   There have been numerous unconfirmed reports that Veil-Born can take on characteristics of mortals. Some people who have had encounters with the Veil-Born claim that they saw one with the face of a parent or heard the voice of a loved one in a cry. It is uncertain why or how this is, if it is true at all. Some believe that Veil-Born are the souls of the dead returning to Duurn as vengeful spirits, but there is no way to confirm or refute this so far.

Behaviour

The Veil-Born do not seem to have any sense of individuality. They operate more as a collective force than as a group of individuals, and if they are capable of speech or individual reasoning, they have not shown it to anyone that has survived. However, there are some reports of "queen" Veil-Born that direct a hive of the creatures. Altogether, they seem purely interested in the destruction of mortal-kind, and the take to that goal with a reckless abandon. While they seem capable of rudimentary strategy, they typically resort to overwhelming their targets with numbers and force.
