Order of Healers

The Order of Healers is dedicated to the Neutral Good demigod Imhotep, the original patron of Medicine, Science, and Craftsmanship. The Order’s theology is unique in that it places rational inquiry and the scientific method on equal footing with spiritual faith. The organization functions as the primary medical authority and research institution in Draconia, believing that healing should be available to all, regardless of magical affinity.

Tenets of Faith

The theological focus is on practical compassion, scientific rigor, and the ethical responsibility of those who practice healing.

  1. The Scientific Imperative: Knowledge is sacred, but applied knowledge is divine. Followers are compelled to pursue healing and scientific inquiry rigorously, constantly testing theories and seeking evidence-based solutions.
  2. The Vow of the Artificer: Every consecrated member must swear the Vow of the Artificer, dedicating their skill to the service of the sick and injured, and never knowingly doing harm. They must share their knowledge with others in the Order and hold the sanctity of life as their highest priority.
  3. Healing Without Bias: Healing is a divine act and must be rendered to all people without bias toward alignment, race, or social standing.
  4. Craftsmanship as Worship: Mastering a craft—whether engineering, surgery, or spell-creation—is a form of worship, honoring Imhotep's status as a master builder and artificer.

Worship

The Order of Healers centers its worship on the disciplined, practical application of knowledge, viewing scientific service as the purest form of devotion to Imhotep.

Everyday Practices (The Rites of Discipline)

Daily rituals focus on maintaining the ethical standards and mental clarity required for healing and research.

  • The Daily Vigil of the Method: This mandatory morning ritual is a private mental exercise focused on objectivity and precision. Practitioners review the scientific method and reaffirm their commitment to fact-based inquiry and the ethical limitations of the Vow of the Artificer (never knowingly doing harm).
  • The Vow of Service: Throughout the day, followers are obligated to perform their work—whether medical, administrative, or research—with the highest dedication, maintaining the principle of Healing Without Bias to all who require their assistance.

Weekly Service (The Communal Practice)

The communal gathering is focused on education, sharing, and the continuous improvement of the art of healing.

  • The Covenant of Shared Knowledge: This is the primary weekly service, often held in a lecture hall or assembly room. The service consists of mandatory presentations where Practitioners and Senior Clinicians share new diagnoses, surgical techniques, or successful alchemical formulas. This communal exchange reinforces the tenet that knowledge must be shared.
  • The Healing Litany: A brief service is held in the central hospital ward of each complex, where priests collectively channel prayers and healing magic toward the sick and injured, reinforcing the Order's compassionate mission.

Sacraments and Ordinances

The Order's ordinances are reserved for the consecrated ranks and mark professional commitment and the sanctity of tools.

Annual Festivals and Holy Days

The annual calendar celebrates the foundation of the Order and its continuing mission of service.

  • The Festival of the First Cut: The most significant annual holiday, celebrated on the anniversary of the first successful surgical procedure performed by Imhotep (the symbolic "first cut"). New Practitioners formally take the Vow of the Artificer, and the Order provides a full day of free medical care and surgical procedures to the general public.
  • The Grand Review (Periodic Festival): A spontaneously called event following a major medical or scientific breakthrough validated by the Dicastery of Scientific Innovation. The festival is a celebration of the advancement of knowledge and usually features public lectures detailing the new discovery.
