Apothis

Apothis is a chaotic creature of the underworld and an enemy of the gods. He is the living embodiment of Chaos in the Pharaonic myth. Apothis appears as a giant serpent, 100 feet long. He is served by hordes of demons, most of them sharing serpentine and fiery qualities.

Tenets of Faith

Apothis is reviled, not revered, by all, even those who do not dedicate their lives to a specific deity. Officially -- according to the priests of Horus and the other deities -- Apothis has no worshipers, no temples, and no creed but destruction and evil. He has been rejected by the pantheon and is not even called a "god." Apothis doesn't mind this; he hates anything that even looks like Order, which is how he views the pantheon.   Those deranged, corrupt, and otherwise evil souls who devote themselves to Apothis agree, at least in part. He has no creed but destruction: destruction of all the Pharaonic gods, their temples, their clerics, their worshipers, and even the world they created and the creatures that inhabit it. The followers of Apothis do not strive for a world dominated by evil; they strive for the end of the world. Chaos does not seek control, because control brings Order.

Clergy and Temples

Apothis's human clerics do not carry unholy symbols that might identify them, nor do they wear vestments as other Pharaonic clerics do. To all appearances, they are ordinary members of society. They meet with other cultists only in secret, under cover of darkness, in windowless cellars, and behind locked and barred doors. Any hint of their activities would bring fiery wrath on their heads from the authorities and agents of the other Pharaonic deities, so they maintain the utmost secrecy.   Apothis has a few who are deranged and chaotic enough to openly support him as clerics. They once built a Grand Temple to the Lord of Chaos where they practiced all manner of despicable acts, including human sacrifice. They once tried to increase the number of those serving Apothis by engaging in the practice of forced pregnancy through rape. Those responsible for this practice were convicted of crimes against morality by the International Court of Justice. Apothis's Grand Temple was eventually razed by an army of paladins of Khepri and Horus.

Holidays

The Blessing of Chains The servants of Apothis perform this ritual on the day that Apothis was bound. The Sunless Sacrifice This event takes place after sundown on the anniversary of the departure of Ra. The servants of Apothis sacrifice an “enemy of Apothis” to the serpent as they view that night as a victory (it is the Winter Solstace). The preferred sacrifice is a servant of Pelor, who they hate as Pelor was the one who bound Apothis in the Twelve Hours of Night. The Blessing of Traitors The Blessing of Evil
