Galbury

Galbury is the capital of Linrea, and one of the largest cities on the continent. It's three distinct sectors span four hills within The Blashpir Expanse, intersected by four rivers and overseeing a majority of food production within Linrea's borders. King Denas Torholde's castle is in the center of the city, built atop the highest point on the hills and overseeing Galbury from all sides. As one gets further out from the main castle, the elevation and economic status slowly begins to decline before eventually reaching the base of a hill. Economic statuses are separated by walls, but citizens are free to move between the districts with little to no limitation-- a simple baker could visit the first district to purchase grain, the second district to bake & sell it, and the third district to pay the taxes on it, all in a single day. This three-tiered system means foot traffic is constantly flowing through the gates, as Linreans from far and wide do business within their kingdom's capital.

Demographics

Due to it's size and influence, Galbury is naturally a diverse gathering of many different peoples from all over the continent-- Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and Halflings are the most common, however, as is true for almost the entirety of Serotonia.
A majority of Galbury's citizens are farmers and laborers living in the outer sector, working minimal wages for arguably some of the most important jobs in the city-- feeding the people and fueling the economy. Within the second sector are mostly craftsmen and shopkeepers, forming the market district in the center of the sector and attracting traders from across Dopamirosa. Finally, the third sector of Galbury houses the nobles and business owners of the surrounding area, as well as most governmental buildings of the city. Those within the city typically stay within their home sector, as most items they need are found at the prices they can afford within their home district. Exceptions can occur, however, such as judicial affairs being handled exclusively in the third sector and pupils from all walks of life visiting the markets in the second sector.

Government

While King Denas Torholde handles grandeur, large-scale problems in Linrea, the menial day-to-day tasks within Galbury are handled by a select circle of Linrean officials-- half of which are chosen by Denas, the other half being elected by the public. The selected officials tend to serve longer than the elected ones, and thus manage the more important aspects of Galbury such as it's judiciaries and defense. These nobles only ended their duties upon expulsion or retirement, whereas the elected half could be voted in and out by the public. Publicly-elected officials handled less important tasks within Galbury, working with the public to improve things like construction and the prices of goods.
Predictably and regrettably, however, much of the time in their meetings is spent arguing over meaningless matters much to the disdain of the public. Things rarely get done unless Denas in the room, as the council knows they must impress Denas in order to stay on the kingdom's payroll.

Defences

Massive circular stone walls surround and separate each sector of the city, hewn from the limestone and granite found below The Blashpir Expanse. Each hillside and slope is taken advantage of, with guard towers stationed at the highest elevations and walls constructed with a natural deterrent around them, protecting the walls and gates from large-scale siege machinery unable to climb the hills' inclines. Defenses and scouts are hidden in dug-out hills for miles surrounding Galbury, adding an extra layer of security for the city guard.

Industry & Trade

While stone and farmland is plentiful, there are still many resources that need to be imported into Galbury to keep it functioning. Food and gold are regularly exchanged for medicinals, materials, exotics, and weaponry. Even the largest of free-settlements send and receive goods from Galbury at some point, often establishing trade agreements lasting for decades at a time. Gold is collected via taxes, with different sections of the city receiving their proportionate rate.

Infrastructure

The area surrounding Galbury is almost entirely covered by fields of grain, planted and harvested by farmers who take advantage of the city's protection and the four rivers that flow through it. A majority of the fields are planted to the north of the city where the water is freshest and free of the Galbury's waste, though some still sew on the southern end to avoid the correspondingly high taxes imposed on the city's northern land. This hefty tax is offset by the highly concentrated population, with the demand for grain never seeming to be fully met by the market.
Additionally, the central location and notability of the city attracts specialist craftsmen and traders from across Serotonia. Businesses such as House Vanderberg and The Braidwater Mill have made a name for themselves here, and continue to flourish from the constant influx of new customers. If one can afford to sell their wares in Galbury, their financial success is almost guaranteed.
