The Braidwater Mill

Finest Textiles in the Realm

On the edge of the Mannotoa River, in the city of Galbury sits an old yet sturdy spinning mill using a massive wooden waterwheel to empower it's machines. Inside it, early morning sunbeams reveal a thick pollution of flax dust powdering the yawning oak floor. Young and Old are toiling away from daybreak to lamplight, having become numb to the pain and blind to the nutty odor invading the room. The diligent spinners here have become masters of their craft-- bringing together the finest of yarns and textiles in the realm, causing outfitters from all over to line up at the door for a chance to purchase even a bolt of the days' batch.   This is all overseen by Lady Tenira, walking the tables dressed in the enchanted purple silk she acquired in her days of exploring. All of her senior crafters cherish the idea of being awarded some of this material. Alas, only four of her workers have ever received the personally-woven sashes, and despite her loquacious nature nobody truly knows why these four specifically were chosen. It remains as nothing more than a whisper among the workers.

Design

Built of oak and stone, the mill stands on even ground at the edge of the Mannotoa River. The close vicinity to water has rotted some of the support columns, but not to an extent of major damage or structural failure. A large waterwheel is attached to the side of the building and multiple axles, each leading to one of 3 spinning machines, are hooked onto an interior gearbox. Wooden support columns are paired with windowed stone walls to maintain a sturdy hold on the gabled and valleyed slate roof. Two chimneys sit at either end of the roof.

Entries

One small wooden door lies in the front of the building. A large permanent glass window sits on the wall to the left of it, with smaller, barred windows on the rest of the walls to let a workable amount of light in during the day. There are some smaller windows above the machinery on the roof to provide daylight to the workers.

Sensory & Appearance

The interior is thick with flax dust from the spinners. A nutty smell spreads across the room and the faint odor of lamp oil lingers in the morning after a long night. The supply closet smells faintly of dye, but oddly, it also smells of lamp oil despite there being no form of lighting.

Denizens

Upwards of 12 workers can be working on the machinery, but there are usually 9. The rest spin entirely by hand using a variety of mismatched and cobbled together tables. It is evident that the workers have tried to cram as many working bodies into the building at once. At maximum capacity, there can be 30 workers at these mishmashed hand-spinning tables. Lady Tenira has her own office where up to 3 clients can be waiting, and 1 transacting business.

Contents & Furnishings

Piles of seeds and powder lie beneath the three evenly spaced, round wooden tables the machinery lies on. A large axle from the ceiling powers the machine and it has space for four workers, but there is usually 3 and a box of spools. Often during the rainy season the machines will overload and break due to the increased river flow and the workers will have to spin entirely by hand. Two fireplaces accompany the large stone chimneys to provide heat during winter, and to heat the large cauldrons to wash the fabric in, as the river freezing over does not stop production.  At the right end of the building, furthest from the waterwheel, lies a door to Teniras' office, with a couch outside for awaiting buyers.  On the other side lies a large supply closet packed with boxes of empty spool. A large locked cabinet contains Lady Tenira's personal supply of fabric and thread, hand-picked from the production line. Some colors are older than Tenira herself, having come from the previous owners and forgotten about by their kin. Included in this cabinet is her remaining supply of enchanted purple silk, treasured by not only it's owner, but also her underlings. In the other corner lies a piece of machinery that automatically produces cloth and fabric out of the spools spun in the main room.

Valuables

High quality cloth and fabric is bound to found within the storehouse, and Lady Tenira's office contains some of her treasures from her younger, more adventurous days.
