Order of the Divine Nepeta

While still a relatively young organization at roughly 1500 years of age, the Order plays an important role in the recent history of the kingdom. Some may find them too proud, too prudish, maybe too straightlaced and no fun. But no one doubts their cause, no one doubts their loyalty, no one doubts the power of their individual members, and no one questions that without them, maybe the kingdom would have fell hundreds of years ago.

The Order of the Divine Nepeta was founded in the year 143 of the Eighth Era, towards the end of the First Great War of the Realms, after Catus separated the original realm into Dominicus Felinus proper, and the Grimmfell to contain the malevolent cat spirits that were created by the First Great War. The first group of the most devote and powerful of the followers of Catus became the founding members of the Order. The founding lead cat of the Order was First Seer Asir. The humans who aided the cats in the First Great War became the first group of summoners, laying the foundation for the Warden-Summoner partnership.   The Order named itself after the Nepeta Cataria, also known as catnip, a plant that is believed to have cleansing powers and help cats obtain enlightenment. The main temple is the Lamiaceae Sanctuary, situated in the town of Nepetanopolis. Located within the confines of the Sanctuary are the divine relics and artifacts of old and the Sacred Garden. The Rite of Flames that occurs four times a year, is also initiated at Nepetanopolis.

Structure

The Order has two branches, Keepers of the Sacred Leaf and the Wardens of the Everbloom. The head of the entire order, serving as the figure head and providing divine guidance to both branches, is the Head Seer. Usually the position is held by the current monarch of the kingdom, but in rare cases, the position can be held by another member of the royal family.   The leading administrative council that reports to the Head Seer, and oversees the administration of the Order, is the Council of Flowers. Compared to other cats of the kingdom, the lifespan of members of the Order is long, blessed by Catus to be over 200 years on average, and potentially immortal in the case of Wardens.

Keepers of the Divine Leaf

The Keepers of the Divine Leaf is the branch responsible for leading the rituals and ceremonies of the kingdom, many of which are instrumental to the upkeep of the Misty Vale. Members serve as general lorekeepers, archivists of history, and advisors on all matters divine. They also tend to the Sacred Gardens in the Order Sanctuaries throughout the kingdom, from which they recieved their name. A subsect of this group also act as traveling healers, mediators, adjudicators and even teachers throughout the kingdom.

The Keepers recruit from cats who show aptitude for ritual magic, a magic that is considered impossible to master without the purposeful aid of Catus. In fact, the general lore is that all Keepers are cats who in their previous reincarnations were members of the Order, even they do nor recall any past lives, thus tracing their origins back to the time of the First Seer.

At its historical height before and during the Second Great War of the realms, the number was closer to 10,000 members strong. The current population of the Keepers is much smaller, only numbering slightly over a thousand.

Wardens of the Everbloom

The Wardens of the Everbloom is the military arm of the Order, responsible for the actual guarding of the kingdom from the Grimmfell for all eternity. They actively patrol the borders of the Misty Vale, and there are tales of daring forays into the Vale itself, sometimes even skirmishes into the Grimmfell. As inheritors of Catus's combat magic, they are the ones who bind with human summoners and take on active missions in the human world when necessary.   The active administration of the branch is completed by the Lord Wardens, each responsible for a region of the kingdom. They are dispersed in each region, with the bulk stationed along the Misty Vale in the Eastern and Northern Reaches. Smaller troops are stationed in the capital region to guard Nepetanoplis and the kingdom Capital.   At its historic peak the number of active Wardens reached closer to 300,000. But recently, the number of Trainees has dwindled, and subsequently the number Wardens has declined. The current active number of active Wardens is slightly over 20,000 with only around 4000 active Trainees.

Council of Flowers

The administrative Council of the Order, consisting of the 5 Prelates of Flowers from the Keepers, and the 4 Lord Wardens. The Council is tasked with overseeing the adminstrative tasks of the Order, and advising the reigning monarch on decisions deemed important to the safety of the kingdom, including at times diplomatic relations with neighboring countries. The Council regularly meets four times a year at Nepetanopolis during the Rite of Flames, and in cases which the monarch deems necessary. Issues such as demotion of Wardens are also decided by the Council.

Assets

Formally, all assets of the Order belong to the kingdom, and to Catus as a whole. This includes the Sanctuaries, and the Sacred Gardens, that are located in cities and towns where the Order has established a permanent site. The four regional capital cities also have Warden academies that fall under the Order's jurisdiction. After the First and Second Great Wars of the Realm, many citizens also donated their homes to the Order, to be used as housing for Wardens and Keepers.

The Sacred Gardens

Other than Nepeta Cataria, also known as catnip, other herbs are grown in the Sacred Gardens, including valerian, silver vine, basil, sage, rosemary, thyme, calendula and mint. The herbs are used normally in ceremonies and rituals, but some are also offered to the public for healing and as good luck charms.   Warden Trainees are given a sash infused with the herbs when graduating. Incense, candles and infusions made with the herbs of the Sacred Garden are also used by Summoners as a way to open the portal between the human and the spirit worlds. Packets of herbs are frequently offered to Wardens patrolling the borders as a sign of gratitude.
