The New Harbour

When the water from the bay of jawa starts to lap on the steps of the city hall, many members of the The Government of Batavia agreed to abandon the old dome for a newer one, relocated higher up inland. Now the carcass of the Dome, as its colloquilly known, became the central piece of the new harbour. Jetties and docks are built around skyscrapers; glassy monoliths that Juts out of the water. Meanwhile, large grey buildings, lined one after the other are lined up neatly on the east side of the new harbour. They are water purifying plants, converting sea water into drinkable, but now importantly, marketable water. Batavia is also known as "The city where water flows" because it supplies many of other surviving settlements with water from its purification plant.

Purpose / Function

The port of entry for many ships that comes from other settlements, bearing goods wears in their holds. To that end, the west part of the new Harbour is dedicated to a large port, often refereed to as the West Port. Massive cranes moves at glacial speed, loading and unloading containers and goods from incoming ships. Mountains of containers stacked on top of one another, refueling stations attached to coils of black heavy duty pipes.   The new Harbour is also home to the water purification plants, supplying clean water to all of Batavia and exporting them to places where water are scarce or non existent.

Alterations

The new harbour stands on the area that was the old city center. The control tower for the harbour is located in the dome of the old city hall. To achieve this, parts of the old city hall has to be put on stillts and the dome itself was reconstructed to be made of glass and steel girdle instead of solid limestone. A large radio tower protrudes from the center of the dome while a large revolving lights can be found attached to a central limestone column near the ceiling of the dome; making the dome a sort of large lighthouse to guide ships into the harbour.

Architecture

The structures in the new Harbour is a real mish mash of old stones, steel and glasses from the old city center mixed with beton stillts to prop up newer structures as well as floating docks and jetties.

History

Before becoming the new Harbour, the area is known as the city center, with glitsy shopping mall, towering skyscrappers and a beloved town hall. The center piece was the the massive, white sandstone domes that seems to radiate brilliance wherever one stands in Batavia. Alas, most of it now lies asleep under the rolling waves.
