Wildspace
Wildspace is the vast, airless expanse that surrounds planets and moons, existing as part of the Material Plane yet connected to the Astral Plane through spelljamming travel. Each Wildspace system resembles a solar system in structure but follows fantastical cosmological rules unique to the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse.
In Wildspace, gravity and air behave differently than on terrestrial worlds. Ships powered by magic—called spelljammers—sail through the void as if through water. Each ship carries its own air envelope and gravity plane, allowing beings to live and breathe for a time while drifting between worlds.
Unlike the vacuum of real-world space, Wildspace is navigable and survivable with the proper vessels and magic. The stars are not distant suns but often pinpricks in the Astral Veil—windows or conduits to other planes or distant systems.
Each system is contained within an invisible crystal sphere, which separates it from the Astral Plane and neighboring systems. These spheres contain planets, moons, asteroids, and other celestial bodies, often with wildly differing physical laws and environments.
Within these systems:
- Planets orbit massive bodies, sometimes magical beacons rather than stars.
- Asteroid fields may harbor hidden outposts, pirate havens, or entire civilizations.
- Living worlds, such as sentient moons or colossal spacefaring creatures, can drift silently among the stars.
Travel through Wildspace is made possible by spelljamming helms—magical devices that allow ships to fly through the void. Journeying between planets in a system takes days or weeks, while crossing into the Astral Sea (to reach other Wildspace systems or planes) involves passing beyond the crystal sphere that encloses the system.
Wildspace is a frontier of exploration and danger. Common themes include:
- Pirate attacks, ship-to-ship battles, and spacefaring monsters.
- Planetary politics and interstellar empires vying for dominance.
- Ruins of long-lost civilizations floating among the stars.
- Strange phenomena, like space-time rifts or rogue gods drifting through the void.
Wildspace is the infinite canvas of spelljammer adventuring—a place where fantasy and spacefaring collide, where explorers chart the unknown and magical ships sail not on oceans, but among the stars themselves.
