Mistral Reach

The Mistral Reach is a howling expanse of bitter cold and ceaseless wind, located in the Elemental Plane of Air, near its border with the Para-elemental Plane of Ice. This vast region marks a transition between the typically open, temperate skies of the Plane of Air and the glacial stillness of pure frost, resulting in a realm where air and cold fuse into something both beautiful and perilous.

The Mistral Reach is merciless but mesmerizing, a region where the purity of air is sharpened by the sting of frost, and where motion and stillness meet in a constant battle of storm and silence. It is not evil, nor malicious—simply raw, untamed cold, the breath of winter given endless sky. For those who can withstand its fury, it offers solitude, reflection, and a glimpse of the harsh beauty found at the edge of elemental balance.

Geography

Unlike the serene azure expanses found in other parts of the Plane of Air, the Mistral Reach is dominated by raging blizzards, freezing gales, and dense snow-laden fogs that swirl endlessly. Visibility is often no more than a few feet, and the cold is so intense that it can crystallize breath midair and freeze exposed skin in seconds.

Drifting within this tempestuous region are shards of floating ice, snow-packed air motes, and massive hailstone formations, some as large as castles. These ice-laden structures tumble slowly through the sky, sometimes colliding and shattering in explosive bursts of frost and wind. Lightning dances through the snow-choked storms, casting brief flashes of pale blue light across the endless white void.

Climate

The air here is not merely cold—it is suffused with elemental chill, the very essence of freezing wind. Even creatures native to the Plane of Air may find the Mistral Reach harsh and inhospitable. Natural flight is difficult, buffeted by the shrieking currents, and magic reliant on heat or flame is dampened or extinguished entirely.

The snow is never still; it whips around in perpetual cyclones, and the winds howl with a mournful, almost sentient quality. Travelers often speak of hearing voices on the wind—echoes of thoughts, cries, or half-remembered names—though whether these are illusions, elemental phenomena, or something more ominous is unclear.

Fauna & Flora

The Mistral Reach is home to frost elementals, ice mephits, and cold-aligned air elementals, whose bodies shimmer like hoarfrost and strike with razor-sharp wind and sleet. Occasional white dragons, frost giants, or even exiled beings from the Para-elemental Plane of Ice may stake out drifting icebergs as lairs or fortresses.

Rarely, crystalline aarakocra, beings adapted to high winds and cold, soar through the blizzards in search of prey or purpose, and some hermit sages or elemental monks retreat here for the harsh solitude and clarity the cold provides.
