Chendl

Chendl, the capital of the Kingdom of Furyondy, is a city of noble grandeur, war-tempered vigilance, and spiritual resolve. Nestled along the banks of the Veng River in central Furyondy, Chendl serves as the kingdom's political heart, royal residence, and symbolic bastion in its long-standing struggle against the dark forces of Iuz to the north.

Chendl is a fortified city of marble halls, shining domes, and proud towers, built in the Oeridian architectural tradition—wide streets lined with colonnades, tiered plazas, and high outer walls clad in pale stone. It is a city of deep traditions, where knighthood, piety, and service to crown and realm are held in the highest esteem.

Despite its beauty, Chendl bears the scars of conflict. Much of the city was sacked during the Greyhawk Wars by the forces of Iuz and later liberated and rebuilt, giving it a newer, more reinforced structure—a blend of high art and hard necessity.

Though safe behind thick walls and vigilant knights, Chendl is not without danger:

  • Assassins and spies of Iuz still seek to destabilize the city.
  • Corruption and rivalries among nobles threaten unity.
  • Refugees from the war-torn north strain city resources and spread tales of horrors beyond imagination.

Still, the people of Chendl endure with pride, standing as a beacon of resistance and faith in the face of the encroaching darkness.

Chendl is not merely the capital of Furyondy—it is the soul of a kingdom at war, a place where virtue is sharpened by necessity, and where the ideals of nobility and righteousness are tested daily against the shadow of evil. It is both a symbol of hope and a sword held high, gleaming in defiance of tyranny.

Demographics

Chendl is a city of noble aspirations and constant readiness. Though its citizens believe in justice, charity, and honor, war is never far from their thoughts:

  • Armor is polished, not stored.
  • Public speeches often begin with prayers for the fallen.
  • Even children are taught of Iuz’s cruelty and the valor of Furyondy’s defenders.

The arts flourish modestly, often depicting historical triumphs or spiritual lessons. Music, sculpture, and theater are patronized primarily by the church and nobility.

Government

Chendl is the seat of King Belvor IV, who has ruled with stern but just leadership through the crises of the Greyhawk Wars. The city is also home to the High Council of Furyondy, composed of powerful nobles and clerics who guide national policy.

The capital is a hub for diplomatic envoys, emissaries from Veluna, Greyhawk, and Dyvers, and even secret agents who move through its courts and markets gathering intelligence.

Districts

2. Temple District
The spiritual center of the city, home to the high temples of Heironeous, Rao, St. Cuthbert, and Trithereon. Pilgrims come from across the Flanaess to pray, seek wisdom, or serve in temple militias.

This formidable stronghold houses the Knights of the Hart, Furyondy’s elite chivalric order. It doubles as a training ground and a military command post, with stone halls filled with banners, arms, and battle-tested officers.

4. The Veng Docks and Artisan Quarter
Where trade from inland rivers and southern cities arrives. Shipwrights, armorers, scribes, and alchemists all ply their crafts here, protected by the city guard and guild oversight.

5. The Noble Estates
A carefully curated ring of villas, manors, and townhouses belonging to Furyondy's dukes, counts, and loyalist nobility. Tensions sometimes simmer here, as rival factions quietly vie for royal favor and influence.
